It’s about Creation, not Destruction

How is it that “Trash the Dress” sessions have become such a huge phenomenon worldwide?  Photographers have been featured on just about every major TV network worldwide (including ABC, CNN, BBC, FOX, CBC and Lifetime).  They have also been featured in many publications (including The New York Times, The London Times, Sydney Morning Herald, Modern Bride, Philadelphia Inquirer, Ventura County Star, and many local newspapers and magazines around the world).  Not to mention shows like Entertainment Tonight and The Insider which have also run stories on the rage.  TTD sessions have taken the world by storm, so what’s the secret to tapping into this thirst for something different?

Through the history of TrashTheDress.com, we have tried to focus on one thing to keep the integrity of wedding photography at the forefront.  We want to make sure that the images we show convey the creation of beautiful art,  not the destruction of a dress.  It’s not about finding the most creative way to destroy a wedding dress,  rather it’s about finding the most creative way to empower the bride to make beautiful pictures, regardless if the dress gets dirty.

Some photographers even shy away from the word “trash”, fearing that it will turn brides off.  We’ve seen “Rock the Dress”,  “Aftershoots”, “Newlywed Sessions”, and many other safe names.  Our friend Kadie Pangburn came up with one of our favorite alternative names,  “Hitched and Haute”.  Call it what you want,  but always keep the integrity of your bride first and foremost by creating something beautiful for her.  We are even creating a new referral list apart from trashthedress.com so photographers can share in the success of the site without having to associate with the word “trash”.  It will be called Modern Photographers  (check out www.modernphotographers.com for more info).

By adding some fashionable bridal sessions to your portfolio, (no matter what you call them),  you will attract brides who are looking for something fresh, something modern, and something fun.  Brides are hungry for something new, join in on the fun!  If you’d like to contribute some solid images from your sessions,  please send them to [email protected].  We’d love to see them!

I love Trash the Dress sessions. Every one I’ve seen has just been awesome. Can’t wait to shoot one myself!

When I got married, almost 13 years ago (!), the sales person who sold me the dress said something I’ve never forgotten. She said ‘Live it up in your dress! You are only going to wear it once so enjoy yourself, get it dirty, it can always be cleaned!’I love that! My husband and I got married on the beach in Hawaii and I think if she had not said that to me I would have been worried about every little spot but she was right, and I enjoyed my own wedding!I love this post!

I haven’t ever heard of these sessions. So fun to read about today. After 10 years of marriage I’ve finally decided to take my dress out of my parents closet and throw it away. Before I did it though I put it on (yes it still fit!) and had a photographer friend take pictures of me in it. It was so fun to play in it and not worry when the rain started to fall. I was even able to get some pictures of me with my 4 year old son. I haven’t told my husband about it, I’m planning to surprise him with a picture from this ‘session’ on our actual anniversary this September!

I saw a friend’s photo where she walked into the water in Jamaica and had the dress floating around her, and I instantly said I would never do that!!! I’m just not that type of person, but her photos were beautiful and she said they had it cleaned right after. I guess it’s ok as long as I can accept that about myself!

I’m not married, I’m not engaged, and I don’t usually photograph weddings…but this post made me want to do it all! What a creative and fun concept. I’m now scouring the internet for more TTD photos. Thanks Jodi and Mark!

The whole thing has become waaaay overdone. Time for the nextr big thing. There’s a fine line between trend and fad and this TTD thing has defineitely crossed that threshold.

Wonderful work guys! It’s great to see some of my fellow “crazies” photographers doing so well in their venture. Keep up the good work!
