Changing Colors of an Object in a Picture

In this MCP Blog It Board below, you see that Alyssa is leaning on or peeking through circles and triangles.  The metal triangle we found was yellow. The circle red. But for her shots I decided it would be more fun both on a wall and in a collage to mix things up.  This is a super easy color change since the object was solid in color.

I used CS4 (but this can be done in earlier versions too).  I made a selection of the red metal that formed the border for the circle using the Quick Selection Tool.  You could also use the Magic Wand in early versions of Photoshop. Once I had “marching ants” around the selection, I made a new Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer. I went to hue slider and moved the slider left and right until I found a color I liked, or in this case I found a few colors for the various pictures.

In the layers panel you will see that the color is already masked off so it the only thing effected. If anything else was effected, you would use a brush to clean up the layer mask, using black to hide the effect anywhere it over spilled.

This tutorial is so easy to do that I did not make screen shots.  Oh course if you have multicolored objects, masking will be more complex.  Have fun color changing.

Thanks. I’ve been meaning to learn how to do this. What I’m really impressed with is that location! What a great set of stuff to shoot with!

I recently purchased cs4. I am new to photoshop and interested in taking an online class to learn how to use cs4 – do you have any suggestions of a good online beginner class?

I would start with my “curves workshop” – as it is a good foundation for PS.

Jodi, would this work well with a blond that has gone one too many weeks without getting her BLACK roots touched up? I had the hardest time with this particular quandry editing some photos this weekend!

Tracy, you might be able to effect roots and paint it on. Not thinking that is the most effective tool for the job though… I would have to play to figure out the best way. I have some ideas but without playing around would not know which works best.

Thanks so much! I don’t do this often because I’m not really go at it. I’ll go try your way and make it all better.
