I do have a blog, and would love to have a re-design of it. I have trouble understanding HTML and I feel like mine still feels like a standard blogger template. I would love for it to have more of a professional look.

Blogging is great for SEO as you can make it keyword-rich and it keeps adding new content to your site, which the search engines like. You can import your blog into social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, so your friends and fans can keep up to date with your business.
The issue is making time to keep it updated!

•If you have a blog, does it helps your business? And what aspects of your blog make it successful? If it is not helping your business, what improvements need to happen so it does?

I have a blog but it is very very basic I am unsure if it is helping or hurting my business at the moment to be honest – I think blogging helps my clients and followers keep up to date on my most recent activity, it also give a personal insite into who I am – they can hopefully see the love i have for capturing smiles and giggles and special moments in life. I love following other photographers blog to help with inspiration, word do not describe my love for MCP (Blog, Facebook and twitter!)

  19. 19

i just clicked through and i love, love, love her work! i’m in the middle of pulling images right now for a new website, would love to spruce up the blog too!

i think a blog is super important! it is more than just showing your images, it allows the potential clients to get a feel for you personally through your writing, the things you say. when i look at my stats i see that my blog actually gets 3x more traffic than my site which makes me wonder if maybe a blogsite isn’t the best way to go. i think the best part of it is clients getting a sneak peek after their session – they’re so excited and they email the link to their friends and family so it just gets my business even more exposure.

I get the feeling my approach is a tad strange in that I want to have a blog up and running so that when I graduate college and go to start my business, I’ll already have work to show potential customers. It certainly helped to get me a position at University Press (my university’s newspaper) and potentially a position as event photographer for the resident student association. I feel that One Thousand Words Home is successful in that it lets the people who read it know what I’ve been seeing/doing/photographing. I know when I go pro and start a business photoblog, I’ll need to work on SEO but I have time yet.

MCP actions has helped us step it up on the processing end! We feel that we are now able to compete more with other area photographers. We are now lacking in our BLOG! EEKK! We need HELP! We have a decent website, but we are still using just a regular old blog. We really need a blog that is professional! Our blog is so important to us. Not only does it show off our recent work, but it tells our story one post at a time. Our clients enjoy hearing about our day with them. As artists it helps them get to know us, our personalities. We think this is so important to help portray our style and who we really are. I’d like to think it brings out their personlaities to. They know we’ll be writing about them.. ;)

I have a blogsite. I was falling behind trying to keep up with both a website and a blog seperate, so I combined the two. I have loved it. So much nicer to maintain. I target a pretty small area, but for the small area I target I have a pretty good success rate for getting people to my blogsite. I struggle with actually getting those people to go from just looking to actually booking. I’m not sure what to do differently to improve business. One thing I would like to do is some serious updating of my current blogsite. I have been having conflict with my current blog template and hosting company since Oct. 09 and have been wanting to change, but funds are limited at the moment. I feel if I have a fresh new look for my blogsite and a new hosting company (have one picked out, just need to get the funds for it.) then people will not only look, but will also book a session or two.

My blog always shows my latest work to my clients and lets potential clients get to know me better. I would LOVE a custom blog so that it would look super professional!

  46. 46

i do have a blog, and i feel that it really helps my business because it shows my clients my human side, helps them to get to know me a bit better, and it’s a great place to showcase what i’m up to!

  47. 47

Ohh Ohh Im excited! I have a blog, I feel its important because it not only showcases your work but your personality. There are lots of photographers out there, people chose someone whose style they like AND they connect with. You don’t know if there will be a connection based simply on a website. I honestly don’t know if it helps my business or not. I advertise that its there and link to it on Face Book all the time, but there are no comments. I know a few people who read it but I don’t know if others are or not. Maybe its time I put up a counter.
Not only does it help tell more about me, it allows me to journal my journey as a new artist. I will be able to look back at old posts, and see how far I have come and the struggles that got me there.

Side note, you and your actions and tutorials totally ROCK Jodi!!

I have a personal blog but not one for my biz yet. I know how important it is to keep people interested and attracted to you and to your work. I mean even on my personal blog…I haven’t blogged in ages! So people lose interest. The use of a blog conveys a sense of who you are to people. It gives them a sense of a relationship with you. So I plan on using a blog for these reasons! To stay connected with clients/people. To stay accountable to my work…to always putting something out there.

I would for sure say a blog helps your business a lot. I am telling all my clients that they will see the first pictures on the blog right a few days after their weeding (this gives them the first look of pictures, no annoying parents and at the same time advertising for me). people here are mostly not sure to have their pictures in the internet. but knowing they will see their pictures just 4 days after the wedding totally wins them over ;)

I am soooo blog illiterate. yes I have managed to get a wordpress blog and am very proud to have gone through the steps to install it myself BUT I am embarrassed to say that it took me hours and lots and lots of cursing (which I hardly ever do btw) because it takes alot of repetition for my brain to comprehend the steps needed to figure these things out. I know the competition is fierce and I truly appreciate the consideration. Thank you MCP and Cinnamon Girl for your generosity! (O:

  86. 86

I do have a blog, and I would love to win a makeover for it! I like my blog for a few reasons: 1. it’s current. Sure, I can look at someone’s website, but if they haven’t done any sessions in a year, I might want to pick someone else who has been more active so I can see their latest style. 2. it directs my clients to a ‘what is custom photography’ site so they can read why choosing an independent photographer over chain studio is something they should seriously consider. 3. I can be a storyteller. I’ve always loved writing, and having a blog allows me to pull that creativity in me out as well.

  87. 87
    Heather says:

I have a blog separate from my website, and I really haven’t utilized to its full potential. I’ve had a very rough pregnancy for the past several months, so my business hasn’t been priority at all. But I plan to turn a new leaf this month, and I know that my blog is a key component to revitalizing my business. I am a huge lurker on many photographers’ blogs, and that’s what really captures my attention as a customer. I want to showcase my work through my blog more effectively. There’s lot of work ahead of me, but I’m reminding myself: BABY STEPS.

I DO have a blogger blog. I am still new with the biz so I know it does allow me some exposure. I like the idea of a blog because it is more personal than your basic website. It let’s your potential clients know more about YOU and your daily life, who you are as a “real” person! I love it! I do know that MY blog lacks a LOT. It’s boring. There are no buttons to click on to take you to a current price sheet. There are no extra pretty features that draw people in and keep them wanting to learn more. Sure, they come to see the pix, read a few blurbs of mine… but there is nothing that says “WOW! This is a feel good site to come and hang!” Know what I mean? It just lacks INFO! I need to get my vision out there and my blog just leaves a lot to be desired. It needs help!!!!!

    Debbie Branda says:

What a wonderful give-away! I’d love a blog – did it a couple of years ago but then took a break from photography & “let it go”. Would love to get a business up & running and a beautiful blog would be great!

I do not have a blog. I don’t even know where to start. I just got my website up in January. I would love to add a blog. I don’t feel as though I am creative enough with graphics to pull it off. I feel it would be a great asset to my business. I do post photos on a facebook fan page. I receive good feedback from people who like to read the “story” behind the shoot. I think a professionally designed blog would only help my business and communication with my clients. I was fortunate to have a cool logo designed for me. Now I would like a designed blog to live up to it! :D

  96. 96

I do have a blog and I think it does help my business. I post sneak peeks which my clients send to their friends. This often results in WOM bookings. It looks like crap though. I use the Tofurious theme, which is great, but I’m so bad at customizing. I tried and I made it worse.

  97. 97

I have a blog that helps my business a lot. It allows clients see my current work. I just wish it wasn’t so plain (it is a template):

It also generates traffic because we offer sneak peaks, especially of weddings, but of most of our shoots. I love blogging, but my blog is rather simple and not customized. I would love a custom header with brides-bellies-babies-byeond photos.

What timing! I am actually currently working on getting my blog established through blogger. I think blogs are definitely the way to go to keep clients up-to-date with my business. It’s a perfect marketing piece and a way for my clients to get to know me…much more personal than a website!

    Lori Alley says:

I do have a blog and I think it has absolutely helped my business…especially since I figured out how to get my blog posts to post automatically on my FB fan page and Twitter! I post sneak peeks there and my contests, etc, which never show up on my website, because I am horrible at updating my site. That makes my blog invaluable! Linking back to other sites and photographers on my blog has helped, too. I would LOVE to win this contest, because updating and streamlining my blog is VERY high on my list of things that need to be done, but I don’t know much about how to get it done. What I have is basic and doesn’t showcase my work like I want it to. Thank you for this opportunity!

Also, I have a link to MCP on my blog, I am a fan on FB, I follow you on Twitter, I subcribe to your RSS feed, I posted a thread about you and this contest on Sam’s World University Forum, and I shared this note on my FB profile as well. I LOVE MCP! ;-)

I have a simple blog ( and it does help my business, but I feel it could be better. It helps in that it gives my clients a place to see fresh work on a regular basis. They get a better feel of my personality and style on my blog because I am posting commentary along with images. I don’t get a lot of comments on my blog though, so it makes me think people aren’t following it. However, I have been told it is difficult to post a comment. Sometimes I’ll run into someone on the street and they’ll tell me how much they loved a certain shoot that I did. Then I realize people are checking it out! I’d love to for my blog to be more user friendly and interactive.

My blog is just thrown together from one of the blogger template and looks unprofessional for the most part. Yes, it’s a great holding place for sneak peaks but I know there is room for a ton of improvement.

I am a photographer in a very small town and so my jobs come by ‘word of mouth’ advertizing. I would LOVE to set up a website, but don’t know how. By doing so I could branch out and actually start making some money at this. I’ve done so many friend’s weddings, family portraits, etc that people here just expect to give me gifts instead of money for my work. I’d really like to invest in some new lenses, a studio light, and some post processing actions but can’t really justify the cost, when I’m not making anything.

So to answer the question….I don’t blog for business….yet. The goal is to start up a portfolio and then kind of work my way towards starting a business. I think a blog is a practical way to acheive this because it can be personalized as much or as little as I want. I plan on having themed posts (monthly contests, fashion pieces, posts about my kids) to help draw my followers in which will hopefully translate to more business.

I believe my blog has helped with the growth of my business. I have been told by friends and clients that it is the first place they go to, rather than my website. They like reading about my recent shoots and other things that are going on. •If you have a blog, does it helps your business?
My blog is a tremendous help to my business. Not everyone and their mother have facebook, but a lot of houses have internet or access to the internet. It is an outlet for me to share my photography adventures, dreams and family happenings. It lets potential clients get to know me without having to pick up the phone. Plus it constantly provides guests with updated content and proof of when it was last updated.

And what aspects of your blog make it successful? If it is not helping your business, what improvements need to happen so it does?

Being able to easily update with photos, videos and any thing else I want to share with my followers. They can also see how I have grown as a photographer by going through old posts.
But, at the same time, I also feel it is a bit frustrating for potential clients. There is no category section to easily bring up all posts relating to weddings or baby photography. I think it takes a tad too long to load for slower systems. I would love for my photos to be larger to really show off my work. Unfortunately, I just don’t have the time (or know how!) to get the job done efficiently! HELP!

I went at this vast world of digital photography head first and thankfully haven’t landed on my head yet! *knock on wood* I obviously still consider myself a semi-professional and love learning how to further my name. I only bought my camera in July! I did massive amounts of research online and off to understand how to go about starting a portrait photography business. Currently, I am a full time college student & mother. A blog was very important to me when I started thinking about building a portfolio site. I wanted my current and potential clients to really see that I was more than just a photographer. I also value spending as much time as possible getting to know and understand who I will be photographing. It’s easy for my clients to open up when I have already shared so much with them (via my blog). I am not the best with coding and really struggled with finding the time to dig deep into customizing my blog. I don’t think it accurately represents who I am as a photographer. Thank you for this opportunity to grow my business. I appreciate that you are lending your talents to someone (like myself) who doesn’t have a ton of time or money but really could benefit from custom design. Keep doing what you do! (

I love these MCP actions!!! No seriously – I ADORE these! I cannot believe I never heard of you until I just saw Kelly Moore mention them in her ‘what’s in her bag’ section of her website! I have had my blog for exactly a year now – just wished it happy birthday on 4th March and of course blogged about it! It has been the best decision in so many ways. I never marketed myself before, but I relied solely upon people sharing their albums or my images being seen in frames at people’s homes. But now that I blog the sneak peeks, clients share their images with everyone – it is amazing. I had my busiest season yet and now no longer have a down season, though the winter weather doesn’t help with location work. I have been longing to update my blog – there are so many things I wish it did and oh how I long long long for the images to be bigger. Finally figured how to do it manually one at a time, but that is not an option. And oh how I long to upload more than 5 at a time – madness! I cannot believe how people always tell me now they are addicted to my blog – it is so flattering but now I need to flatter them back and get a great new blog!! Thank you so so much and congratulations on becoming a new advertiser! xx

    Brandilyn says:

My website doubles as a blog, with a “journal” style home page… so this article makes me think about if I need one? And I’m not quite sure how I would benefit from having one… but if I consider my site a blog – well then I think it’s a great way to show off sneak peeks for your clients, and to show a more laid back, fun side of your photography – throwing in some personal images… Also, it’s hard to go in and edit your entire website, so a blog is the absolute up-to-date images you’ve been doing. So as a client, that’s what I would want to see really, rather than the website gallery images.

I do not have a blog, nor do I have an official website. I know how much both of these advertisement tools would improve on my business, I just have not had the time or money to move forward. Photography has changed my life. I am a stay-at-home mother and wife and have discovered this art and new passion that has made me more than a mother and wife. When I see my work displayed in homes and get praises for my work, it makes it all worth it. Years from now these pieces will still be priceless, at even a greater worth. why do I need a blog? To help spread the news, to display my work around the world to help others spread share with family and friends, to move towards the next level. What would i do with a blog? Share. That is simply it. I would share my love and passion and that, to me, is enough!

I do not have a blog yet, but would really like one to compliment my website. It seems that a captivating blog would give clients an opportunity to keep up-to-date on current work and maybe see their sessions highlighted there. It would also be a way to inspire clients and seekers to visit and be curious. It seems to
personalize a custom photography business just a little more making it that much more attractive. I would like to a creative blog like the ones Timi creates to make it more fun to look at. I am just starting out in my photography business so i really haven’t seen a lot of traffic due to my blog but hopefully as i get more customers and word-of-mouth, i will get more traffic and customers. I think blogs do help drive business b/c it lets your potential customer get to know YOU. And i think YOU are the most important part of your business.

I still feel new to the photography world even though I’ve been working as a photographer for about three years. My little blog is sad and the portraits are so small. I feel a little embarrassed when my clients go check out my favorites. I’ve done lots of research on different photography blogs & websites, but so far the ones that interest me the most are about $1000 or more. Just haven’t had the funds yet! Would LOVE to have a professional and impressive looking blog that would not only serve as a great preview for my clients, but a great way to advertise as well….

I have a blog and only a blog. I can’t afford a website right now so that’s the only way to get my business out there. I need to bring in more traffic, I don’t think many people are looking at it. I also would love to be on top of Google searches and stuff like that. I really need help.

Since we do not currently have a website, our blog is probably the best and most rounded way that we present ourselves to our clients and we get a fair amount of traffic. The blog not only features our work, but it also gives a potential client a feel for our personalities, our style and what they can expect from a session with our studio. We use our blog to showcase sneek peaks, final session images with commentary and slideshows/videos. We also use it share news, specials and other valuable information to our clients. The blog is a great personal approach to advertising and presenting yourself to the public. Even though it is our best asset, it is in desperate need of a professional finish. Winning a refresh such as this would probably help us to reach the “next level” we are striving for.

I do have a blog. However, it is very plain and not something I maintain. I would love to create a better looking blog and be proud of it. Perhaps I would find more of a thrill in posting to it! I love these designs by Cinnamon Girl and just purchased the template.

I have a WordPress photo blog that I am using as website for now. Since it is serving as my website as well, obviously it helps my business, but I really need to redo it.

There is a link to your site on the sidebar of my site at

I also tweeted about this entry.

I do have a blog (wordpress) but it is awful. I’ve tried to fix it up myself, but I’m not there. It is not driving in business. I’d like change into more fine art photography and tie it in with etsy. Maybe add a shop for print and card sales. Definitely needs a lot of work and right now I have little time, energy or know-how to do it! Ah, a girl can dream…..

I do have a blog, but it’s not fitting where I want my business to go! I set up my blog last year and it’s been a great asset, but now that I know the clientele I want to book and what my vision is, I definitely need to change it! :)

I don’t have a blog but would love one so that I could record the random things that happen around here with my family. Recording things on a daily/weekly basis would be awesome…and a blog would make me be accountable so that I would update it frequently.

I don’t have a blog, but I’ve been trying to figure out how to get one going for qhile now. I’ve been hesitating because I want to make sure it represents my style as well as looking professional. I think it would drive a lot of people to my website, and I would love to share stories along with my clients sneak peek. I have great clients, and I think they would enjoy the blog and little insider stories. :) Thanks for the chance to win. Your blog designs are beautiful.

I don’t have a blog but would love one. I think it would be so much fun to have one to show friends and supporters what my style of photography is and how it will change with time. I would also like to do fun photography “projects” and show them off on a blog. :)

My blog helps give prospective customers an idea of how I shoot. I think its simplicity makes it very intuitive. I’d like to get more creative with the banner, but it’s all I have for now. Maybe I’ll win and then it’ll be a different story.
