How To Edit Outdoor Newborn Images With Newborn Necessities

If you want to photograph newborns, read about our Online Newborn Photography Workshop.

Don’t pull your hair out when editing newborn photos.  Here’s some easy steps you can take to process your photos with ease.

I love this time of year since I can take my newborns outdoors for part of their portrait session. There are so many ways to edit images and so many different styles. I LOVE MCP’s Newborn Necessities Photoshop actions especially when editing outdoor images since you can really tweak the images to get the “look” you want. In the image below I really want a soft airy feel. It was shot on a cloudy day with my Canon 5dMII, 50 mm f/1.4 lens. I took this image with the following settings: ISO 100, f/1.8, 1/5000. It was shot in RAW.

Here is the image SOOC (straight out of camera):

I really wanted to soften up the colors and give it an airy feel. Here is the end result:

Here is the step-by-step edit:

Though it looks like a lot of steps, it only takes a minute or two per image. Editing with MCP Newborn Necessities cuts my editing time in half.

Thanks for this great tutorial! The actions look beautiful! Question: Do you retouch all of your images before showing to the client? I heard a wedding photographer recently say that they don’t retouch until the client is paying for the time. I understand that business-wise, but don’t know if you’ll get the same emotional response from the client without the retouching. Care to share your thoughts? Thanks.
