5 Tips for the Perfect Newborn Holiday Picture

Everyone wants the perfect holiday picture of their little ones to send to friends and family. Taking that perfect newborn picture is harder than it sounds!

Here are 5 tips to get you started taking the perfect newborn holiday picture:

  1. Take lots of pictures – the more you take the more choices you will have. You may be going for one look, but find that something else might look a little nice in the post processing.
  2. If your little one isn’t happy, try again later. Work on the child’s schedule, not yours. Before I do a professional shot, I make sure I know and understand the child’s routine and schedule. Then I fit my schedule into the baby’s – not the other way around.
  3. Be quick! The little ones don’t have a long attention span.
  4. Be prepared. Make sure your little ones are warm and fed before you start. Also, make sure you have a plan in place – what photos and props do you want to take, and in what order? The more prepared you are, the better off you will be!
  5. If what you are trying to do isn’t working, then try something else.
  6. Bonus Tip: Use MCP Actions Newborn Necessities Photoshop Actions to edit your work.

Some Inspiration…

Below are a few different sessions of itty-bitty ones posing for their first holiday card. The set up for all of these photos was pretty simple and inexpensive. The set-up includes white Christmas lights (the cords were white too) and dollar store Christmas bulbs. The further away the child is from the lights (I recommend about 3-6 feet away) and the smaller the aperture number (in most of the shots below the aperture was at 2.8) the blurrier the lights will be.

These images are of a 7 days old little baby boy. You can see how fun it is to use props with newborn pictures
