This is more a question – than an answer…  So if you have opinions or just want to give critique on these photos, feel free to leave a comment.

North or South Facing Light suppose to be the best?  I thought it was North, but I was in my living room and my girls cooperated yesterday and let me take some photos.  Here are a few of them.  I really liked the lighting – and it was south facing. So tell me what you think – do you prefer North or South Natural light? And why?

Settings (may have varied slightly – most were this) – 50mm 1.4 (a few used my 85L but it was too long on the 40d so I went to the 50 1.4.)

ISO 640, Av 2.2, 1/125

Editing: edited these using “Color Burst” from the “Complete Workflow” Color Pop Photoshop Actions – and used the “Eye Doctor” and “Touch of Light.”

6. Hmm – this one is looking a tad cool to me – I may have to warm this up a bit. And I wish I had the 50 on – but it was before I switched – so her foot was chopped since I had no more room to back up.

I have all of Nichole Vans, Itty Bitty, and Pioneer Womens (which use ALOT)….I find myself using Nichole’s eye fix alot and wanting to give yours a try. The first pic seems to be slightly hot in area’s around the face but otherwise very nice as always :>). So here is my list…Number 1—-Like very much except for the hot spots on the face…Would love to see more color on the hair bobbers, but the color on shirt and couch are fantastic!Number 2 & 3 WOW if I could get shots like these on my site just WOW..Number 4 tad on the dark side but like the effect. The dolls Jeans in the background slightly distractingNumber 5 Agreed slightly on the cool side6 & 7 GREAT with 7 being just FANTASTIC PROBABLY MY FAV : >)8—Would like to see more of the facesHeck why Im I even critiquing they are all Fantastic….Are you near the Dallas/Fort Worth area?? I love it! Your girls look so close..like they are bff’s. I have a quick ? When I shoot with my 85L 1.8….I shoot it usually at F2 or F2.8. I am still having trouble with getting both eyes in focus??? Where do I need to focus? Between the eyes or forehead or ?Thanks!!

Jessica hello,Thought I would chime in …Wonder how many guys are reading the forums…Feel like my bro and I the only ones lately…I would try maybe backing up a bit for greater DOF (depth of field) or stop down a bit with the lens…I try to always focus on the eyes placing focus point on the eye closet to you. Hope this helps

Jessica – I usually focus on the eye closest to me. Sometimes I am just too wide open. The other day I shot some where one eye was tack sharp and one was slightly OOF. I did not post those. But here is an example:http://multiplechoices.smugmug.com/photos/357040194_yc7js-XL-1.jpgI was at 1.4 – I should have gone to 2.2-2.8 as the eyes were on slightly different planes and you can see the eye on our left is OOF. I still like it – but none-the-less it is not tack sharp in 2 eyes.

I love them – especially the first 3 (are those the south or north and the others the opposite?) – I like a little warmth in my photos and to me those ‘popped’ out at me and I went wow. I love the wow factor. 🙂

Those pics are as adorable as your girls! Where did you get those beautiful crocheted tops? Love them!Your lighting is on the money. I don’t have any preference to north or southern light – I use what’s available at the time.I did get some really great shots of my new baby granddaughter at her front door with southern light. Absolutely love the look.Jodi, just wanted to thank you for being so generous in sharing your experience, knowledge, and techniques here on the blog. It’s one of my very favs. Pam

All great, but love, love, love the second from the last (#7), and the “pose” in #5. Lighting is very nice and it seems like you got great DOF with lens open to 2.2? Why is that? Oh, and I love the crocheted tops too!
