Photoshop tip and video tutorial: How to make a watermark for your photos

(I also have a free watermark photoshop action)

Are you afraid of your photos getting stolen online? Are you worried that your customers will take the low res photos you put online and try to print them? One easy way to avoid this is to watermark them.

To do this you will take your photo, re-size and sharpen for web (you may use the Crystal Clear Web Sharpening Photoshop actions) that is part of the FREE MCP Actions High Definition Sharpening set. Then you need to create a brush to stamp on your photos, using either your logo or text.

I just went back to your blog because I wanted to watch the videos about the histogram. What I found was even better. Just 2 days ago I was searching for a way to do my watermark and was wondering how I can do it with the brush. Now I have the answer. and its SOOOOO. simple. Thank you so much for the great tip.

I knew how to do this already, but never thought of putting the brush on it’s own layer! What a great tip. You can also do effects this way like outer glow etc. Thanks!

Thank you so much for this blog. For work, I write for our blog – I write for the North Dakota Horizons magazine – and I use a lot of my own pictures. I’m still learning how to use my camera and take great pictures – but this tutorial today answered one of my biggest questions. Thank you.

Jodi – Thank you – this is fantastic. I followed the video step by step and the only issue I’m having is figuring out the keyboard shortcut to actually stamp the watermark on the picture. Do you know what keys or options I need to select to do that? Thanks!!

    • MCP Actions on July 29, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Karen – not sure what you are asking exactly – but if you mean how do you stamp the brush on then you select the brush tool (B). Then select the brush you just made – and click on your photo to stamp it on. Does that help?

Perfect! Worked like a charm. Thanks a million!

Thank you for an awesome tutorial, Jodi! It was fantastic!I do have a question. After I “select > all”, the option in the edit drop down menu for “define brush preset” is not highlighted. Would that have anything to do with my logo being in more than one color? Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

    • MCP Actions on July 31, 2009 at 1:55 pm

It will not stay one color – but that would not cause problems. Size can. It needs to be 2500px or smaller.

I’m in PS Elements 6 and I don’t have a “brush” icon in my toolbar. I’m thinking I should. I really would love to do my watermark this way, rather than pulling the PS file over and dragging my watermark onto every photo from that. I’m just having problems getting started – it’s my first time working with brushes. Any idea where my brush could have gone? Also, I usually watermark after I adjust image size for web. do you always do it prior adjusting for web image size? Thanks for any help you can give me!

    • MCP Actions on August 2, 2009 at 8:42 am

You can watermark before or after resize. Just remember to save an unwatermarked version too. As for brushes elements has them to. I do not have a way to show where as I do not have it anymore but it should be along the left side toolbar.

  19. Anita on August 3, 2009 at 1:52 pm

Thanks for the response. I did finally figure out the brush issue. It was a hidden option under the pencil icon. Brushes is now the visible option… I’m new at this; can you tell? Ha! Thanks!

This is AWESOME! Thank you. I’ve always known how to create my own brushes, but I never thought to use a brush for my watermark. I can’t believe I’m so SLOW that I didn’t think of that. You’ve just saved me a lot of time. Thank you!!

  21. Brooke on August 3, 2009 at 5:13 pm

Thanks! I know this is several years old so I don’t know if it’s still active, but if so: is there a way to use this process while maintaining the COLOR of the logo? Thank you!

  27. Jessica W on July 7, 2012 at 10:14 am

Okay, so this is elementary but when I go to edit>define brush preset (after resized to 2500px)it says Could not complete the Define Brush Preset command because the selected area is empty. What is this && how can I fix it? Thanks so much! Also, it is a premade logo I purchased (a .png file, that is all white with a transparent background) I also have it in black, color, and a jpeg.
