Tamron USA, a worldwide lens manufacturer, picked Ellie and Jenna, along with Multiple Choices Photography, to do their Fall 2009 Ad campaign for the 18-270mm lens.  Tamron’s Chief Marketing Officer contacted me a few months ago to do a commercial assignment photographing my twins with their award winning travel lens, the 18-270mm.  It was a very exciting opportunity this summer.  The ad will run this Fall in Photography magazines such as Popular Photography, Outdoor Photography, Shutterbug, Digital Photo Pro, Scrapbooks Etc, Creating Keepsakes and on their website too.

It was fun learning experience.  My experiences had been focused on professional product photography and photo editing prior to my current business doing Photoshop training and creating actions for the past 3 years. So while I was not new to seeing my work published in magazines and on the web, I was new to doing a commercial shoot like this.

I thought it might be interesting for many of you to have a behind the scenes look at what a commercial assignment entails, the obstacles, and the details of the shoot.  So stay tuned to read the details next week about the preparation, photography, and about Tamron’s amazing travel lens for crop sensor cameras.

The goal of the ad is to show how close and far away you can be standing in the same spot using this lens – and then to show hand held at 270mm with the “vibration compensation” on and off.  I was at 1/13 and 1/20 for the Vibration control shots.  I would not dare shoot that slow a shutter speed in “real life” but as you can see – WOW at 270mm with VC on.

Here is the ad – shot with the Canon 40D and the Tamron 18-270mm lens.

Hey Jodi! I got my issue of Shutterbug yesterday and saw this ad. I was so excited to see your girls! This lens looks awesome and I think you did a fantastic job of demonstrating it’s abilities. Congrats!

Thank you Amy. My girls keep freaking out – they are like “look – that’s us…” I think Pop Photo comes around this time of the month too. So I can watch them get excited again. It was fun. This lens is a perfect travel lens. I have the equivalent for my 5D MKII and many of my recent vacation pictures were taken with it (the 28-300 from Tamron).

That’s awesome Jodi! Congrats!! I bet your girls are just as excited to see themselves! I love my Olympus for it’s in-body Internal Stabilization which make all of my lenses “not shaken”.

That is so awesome! Congrats!! I’m totally intrigued by this lens, could really use it! I already love my Tamron 24-75mm but find myself needing more and less zoom! 🙂

When I first saw your post about this ad, before you revealed which company it was for I figured it was for something like this, either a camera or a lens! I’m sure your girls are super excited to see themselves in print! Congrats!

Saturday my husband came home with his hands full. He was so excited to surprise me with some things he had bought for me from the camera store. One of them was this lens!!!! He said everyone has been raving about it. I haven’t really had time to use it alot, but what I have seen so far I love it. I’m excited to to test drive it.

Hi Jodi. I know this is 2 years down the line, but things can be a little slow around here (South Africa!) sometimes. I was totally taken in (amazed) by your photo shoot with the Tamron lens, so went out and bought one! I have the Canon 450D camera, and thought this lens would be just the ticket for taking on holiday. Unfortunately – not so… Every single picture I take comes out soft. Please would you (if its not unethical), give me some tips to correct this, using this particular lens. I am tearing my hair out because it wasn’t cheap. It is better when I use a tripod, but that is not always convenient! The lens (when hand held) makes a ‘grating’ noise when it has captured the image, which in turn makes me move slightly. Did you find this? Your input would be so appreciated so many thanks in advance.

I did not experience that. I would call them. Maybe you got a bad one. It happens, even with Canon and Nikon lenses, that a bad one slips into the bunch. Usually you can get them to calibrate the lens.As far as grain, that has to do with your iso, exposure, but not the lens so much.Hope that helps.Jodi
