What’s Next For MCP: Share Your Ideas to Win

As many of you may know, MCP Actions typically introduces one new live online workshop a year, 2 full action sets a year (one in the spring and one in the fall), and a holiday free action.  Occasionally other small projects pop up along the way but this is the formula that has worked well for me to balance my blog, business, and family life.

And though judging from these 90+ degree days we are smack in the middle of summer, I am planning for my Fall release. I have nothing set in stone as to which direction I will go in. I have a few ideas, but I really want my customers to help guide this. While there are dozens of possibilities, I would like to hear from you. Please add your ideas and thoughts in the comment section.  The more specific the better.  No idea is off limits, well unless it is R rated or “actions for Elements” as this is a separate project being worked on simultaneously.

For every 100 comments to this specific post on the blog, I will commit to a give away of 1 of the new products upon release (in the form of a contest in the future).  So share you ideas! And if you are wanting to WIN Photoshop CS5 and some MCP actions now, enter the two contests I have running on this post.

Thank you, Jodi

I would love to see as much as possible for PSE8 to start with! I would like ways to make the backgrounds different, like all black or all white. Actions to make awesome blacks and whites…

  2. Maria Trader on July 14, 2010 at 9:38 am

If you can work your magic to create anything that helps with pixelation/noise reductions I would jump at that.

  3. Julie Martin on July 14, 2010 at 9:51 am

Yes! I am with Maria. I would love a noise reduction action!

  4. lizindsm on July 14, 2010 at 9:57 am

    Noise reduction!

  5. Dana on July 14, 2010 at 10:20 am

I think I will vote on a noise reduction as well!

  6. Brad on July 14, 2010 at 10:20 am

I think it would be great to have an online Q&A workshop dealing with the business side of professional photography where you would have a panel of professional photographers that we could field questions to. The guest posts you have had dealing with this subject have been great, but there’s always questions that would be great to ask a panel.

I would love actions for hair – adding highlights, sheen. filling in hair for open spots, cleaning up flyaways without it looking like a clone/cut/straight edge outline (tell tale sign), change color – for starters

I think it would be great fun to see a fall themed actions set for your fall release! Fall is my absolute favorite time of the year for photography! With all of the activities the fall brings, I think you could go crazy with actions to help give our pictures that extra something your actions always do!What about some cool textures… I’m thinking vintage, fall, leaves, pumpkins and vines…Some actions that help give fall leaves that extra pop, brighten those gorgeous fall sunsets, capture that golden hay, bright candy apples, denim blue overalls…without looking overdone or messing with skin-tones of course. For those of us who photograph babies we all know a parent can’t resist dressing their little person up in some silly getup that is totally ridiculous and adorable at the same time! An action for bringing out the details in these costumes would be fun… like superhero brights maybe? A story board of their little munchkins romping around in their costumes or big piles of leaves with insert-able quotes and captions (fall, thankfulness or Halloween themed of course) A greeting card template, maybe I’m the only one, but I cant resist sending the whole family a greeting card with my crazy clad kiddos each Halloween.Maybe even some crazy fun textures… like spider webs or a “haunted” look for those not shooting little ones. Actions for candle lights/bonfires… Fall brings football season, so you could do some sports themed storyboards, an action for making those uniforms…footballs…pom poms… pop! Maybe even a tutorial on how to capture great sports candids. When I think of fall I think of rows and rows of bright orange pumpkins, piles of leaves, overalls, carnivals, festivals, family gatherings, candy apples, candy corn, hay bales, changing leaves, gorgeous sunsets, football, apple pie, face painting, back to school, homecoming, hay rides etc.. I think you could pick any one of these “themes” and go crazy with color schemes, textures and other fun ideas. I know I would eat it up!Fall brings such great inspiration, I’m sure your creative mind could dive much deeper into this than mine, and I might be totally on the wrong path, but Id love to see a fall actions set!

Would love to see and action to deal with freckles and freckled faces. Would also love to see an action for selecting hair even if it just walks me through the steps in CS5. I don’t do it often enough to remember it for when I do need it. Thanks!

  10. Melissa on July 14, 2010 at 11:40 am

An action for removing a subject from the background … I know I am asking for alot! 🙂

  11. Julie Burger on July 14, 2010 at 11:54 am

It would be wonderful if you could make some presets for Aperture. I am a Mac girl and I love Aperture 3 but I would adore some presets for my program.

  12. Wendy Mayo on July 14, 2010 at 12:04 pm

How about some new skin actions? The skin smoothing etc. is great, but I usually have to add texture back in to make the skin look real. Can you make an action that smooths, but adds a bit of texture too?

  13. Stephanie on July 14, 2010 at 12:46 pm

Is there an action for removing braces? I know I may be asking for a lot, too, but I was just curious.

  14. Andie on July 14, 2010 at 1:09 pm

I’m so glad you asked this question bc i’ve been meaning to send you an email about this type of action! I would love to see one where you can create the 4 panel Andy Warhol type action. IE. Photowow.com That would be AWESOME!!! Thanks Jodi. Looking forward to your next creation!

  15. alana on July 14, 2010 at 1:58 pm

I would love to learn about special effects like water reflection – making the subject look as if they are ankle deep in water with their image in rippling water. I’m sure my PSC4 can do this, but have no idea how. Also would like to learn how to change background solid colors without it looking fake.I feel like I have a Lexus and no drivers license with my wonderful program and your incredible actions!

  16. marla on July 14, 2010 at 2:50 pm

How about some nice soft type of vintage actions with fall tones?

  17. Kristen Hay on July 14, 2010 at 3:05 pm

Noise reduction (preferably with options of where you want the noise reduced). Thanks! I am loving all of the actions that I use of yours!

  18. Kyna on July 14, 2010 at 6:07 pm

The noise reduction action sounds great to me as well. (I also love the idea of a photography business workshop.)

  19. MarshaMarshaMarsha on July 15, 2010 at 12:14 am

I would love to see some of your action sets sold a la carte. I realize that it might or might not make business sense, but it sure would be nice to be able to pick and choose in order to eliminate actions that are similar and get the ones that would fill specific needs.

  20. Lisa on July 15, 2010 at 12:40 am

Let’s see. I would love a set of album templates where the backgrounds, stroke, etc. can all be customized. I haven’t quite figured out if I want to use photoshop or Indesign for creating albums; I’m experimenting with both. (It’s possible you can’t create templates in Indesign; I’m not sure about that.) I would also go for noise removal actions.I’ll have to think a bit further about the workshops options!

  21. Belinda Olsen on July 15, 2010 at 2:07 am

-vintage action with a warm and cool version-noise reduction one that does color and luminance -texture action to add grain/grit for a really masculine look-a selective color pop/saturation: blues, greens, oranges, yellows, purples, blacks, etc-bokeh and sun flare-selective sharpening-actions to change from srgb to adobe and visa versa-maybe an action that is cropping and resizing but that when you were selecting the area to crop show a grid with rule of thirds that when you finalize the grid would not be there-overlays with various designs/scrolls/patterns/colors etc-able to create psuedo hdr-‘painting on’ highlights to skin tones and creating the ‘off camera flash’ lookJodi, I love your work and wish I had hundreds of dollars to spend :-)I love that you have people share their business lessons/ideas.

  22. Belinda Olsen on July 15, 2010 at 2:50 am

I had another idea. I don’t know how you feel about this but selling your actions ala carte. I would honestly pay $5-10 per action to be able to hand pick the ones that I am in need of now. I would also love to see a detailed list of what actions do. I love seeing the images with the before and after but to actually know what snap, telescope etc do.

  23. Maria Trader on July 15, 2010 at 9:30 am

I would also like something to do with changing color casts on water. I have a lot of shots where the water looks really green due to pollen or reflections from trees, but it’s not flattering.

  24. Steph Owens on July 15, 2010 at 10:12 am

Let me begin by saying that I love your hard work and dedication Jodie. Your passion for this industry really does shine. Your actions are great and I LOVE your blog-it board sets… I have fun with them. Keep doing what you are doing… I want to agree with the poster who suggested that perhaps a Q & A with a true professional would be a great idea. It seems in reading some of the comments that there are a lot of photographers out there who are relying on actions for every step of their work. I would love to see us collectively getting back to the basics of just good shooting. What happened to good exposures and creating a bokeh effect, sun flare, blurred back grounds and good composition in camera? Please do not misunderstand me- I use actions to enhance my images- but it starts with good photography- good composition, good exposure and thinking about the shot before you shoot. (and grid overlays are available in lightroom when you need to create a rule of thirds) What I am seeing is people asking you to re-invent the wheel… more vintage, more black and white- Jodie is asking us to think outside the box~ That is the biggest mistake we make as photographers today- we don’t want to have to think- about our settings, about our subjects, about composition- we’ll just “fix it in Photoshop”. Photographers happen every day my friends… what makes your images interesting? I am not asking that as a derogatory question-.I asked to make you think. when you look at an image and it is interesting to you, what makes it so~ is the “action” or is the action? Why does it speak to you? Why does it move you? My daughter is becoming a photographer in her own right (she is 15- and just starting out) but I ask her the same question- not to get a right or wrong answer or to make her think I don’t like the image- but to take her a level deeper. Just don’t be running so hard trying to get where you are going that you forget why you are running. Start with a good foundation and build on it. Learn about the business of people and ask questions. LOTS of questions…

hI would love a “watch me work” workshop. Something where the students could send a picture a their own and watch how you would edit it from A to Z. Borrow your eyes for 1 hour or 2 🙂

  26. Nadia on July 15, 2010 at 11:44 am

I would love to see a workshop dedicated to making beautiful black and whites! I can’t seem to consistency get what I want.

  27. Diana on July 15, 2010 at 3:31 pm

I think a Fall Release of the ‘Fall Themed Action Set’ would be neat. Making the reds, oranges, yellows, and browns pop. I’m thinking Thanksgiving colors and the leaves changing. Storyboards for the major holidays (Thanksgiving, Halloween) as well as major school events (First day of school, football/cheerleading, homecoming). I love storyboards. Also, is it possible to create photoshop made sun flare? If so, a neat action to have would be one that creates a variety of sun flares.

  28. Shelly on July 15, 2010 at 9:56 pm

I would love a free action for converting to black and white. I just need a simple one, but it’s not included in most of your editing actions that I have purchased.

  29. Rachelle on July 15, 2010 at 10:50 pm

Gosh, I hope this doesn’t sound too trite… but being a photoshop newbie… I don’t even know HOW to use actions and what you need to do prior to setting up the action.Having a post of “how to” from the very beginning would help. I have not bought any actions b/c I am intimidated on how to use them *:-S

  30. RobinJan on July 18, 2010 at 12:53 pm

I would also love to see a noise reduction action but what I would really love is to have some MCP presets! Anything for Lightroom in the works?

  31. Eduardo on June 7, 2012 at 1:15 pm

very nice! I like it when the moon is already up and its not quite dark yet! Pretty cool!Sandy Reply:July 23rd, 2010 at 5:38 am,Actually it was a lot daerkr outside than the photo shows. I read about this on some photo blog that if you set you shutter speed very slow that the ambient light from houses, security or street lamps and the remaining light from the sun will light up a photo like this.
