Super Quick Photoshop Tip That Will SAVE You!

Have you ever ordered a large print of an image you photographed?  “Large” can mean different things to different photographers, but for the sake of this post, let’s say anything 16×20 or above.  If you are ordering a Gallery Wrap Canvas, Gallery Block, or large print for framing, you may curse, hit or even injure yourself when it comes back… My tip below WILL SAVE YOU!

For those on Facebook who saw this image, or if you read my blog post on Friday with the video of me editing the photo below, you will notice, I did not catch my error until today – just before ordering. Looking at the 4×6 proof and even looking at this image on my screen,  you probably do not see a hair on her lips and chin.  BUT…. It is there.

Looking at the 4×6 proof and even looking at this image on my screen,  you probably did not see a hair on her lips and chin.  BUT…. It is there.

Using hindsight as my guide, I zoomed into this image before ordering. The image below is what I saw.  Years ago I ordered a canvas and my daughter had a big flake of dried, chapped lips that I missed in a 4×6 proof.  I seriously was beside myself when I missed what would be a 2 second Photoshop edit using the patch tool – instead to this day, I look at this 24×36 canvas and see that above all else. Lesson learned – it will NOT happen again.

As you can see from the closeup above, I am so thankful I decided to inspect ever inch before ordering.  To the left side, I see what looks like sugar from a donut and across her lips and chin – one loose strand of hair.  It likely would not be a big deal in an 8×10 or certainly in a 4×6.  In a large canvas, it would be very noticable.

So the lesson, quick tip to save you – ZOOM IN before you order BIG! I promise you will thank me later.

I’ve done nearly the same with a flake of skin on a newborn. I ate that cost as I did not deliver it to the client! Lesson learned for me too, I always zoom in to actual pixels and look the image over before ordering. 🙂

I had that happen with a child portrait before when it arrived there was what appeared to be a huge house fly but when on the screen or in an 8×10 it clearly blended in with the outdoor portrait but when blown up on a canvas…it looked like the fly was coming to attack the boy. Every since then I always zoom in 🙂

Great point, I am ordering one this week and now I will go back and take a second look. Did the same thing a couple of months ago when I ordered a huge print of a very textured/layered piece of work I did. When I got it back, at that size I noticed that one of the “paint brush” pieces I worked in should have been under a different layer and ended up looking very bad when blown up to the size I used. Could not see it in the proof, the 5×7, or even the 8×10. Thanks for this great reminder.

As someone new to the whole ordering thing I would have not thought of going in so close. Thanks, you’ve probably saved me future frustrations 🙂

So glad you are reminding me about this today!!!!! Thank you!!!! I think it’s easy to be lazy and assume all will be well. But you’re so right!!!! Something sooooo easy to fix could ruin your portrait. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I just ordered my first canvas a few weeks ago. At the last minute it came to me to see the picture zoomed in. Was I glad I did. I had cloned out certain areas quickly not looking to enlarge it so big. I had to redo spots and take my time. Thankfully I did this or I would not have been happy seeing it in a larger size. It is a great reminder. I am so glad I thought of it right before I ordered. Glad you caught that hair. =)

This is a terrific reminder! I’ve had it happen to me but it’s good to be reminded.

What a great tip! I do that sometimes, though not every time. Should definitely be more careful about it. Even though I don’t usually order huge prints (I’m a hobby photographer, not a professional one) I still like to cover all the details.
