Instagram has announced that it reached 100 million monthly active users, a little over two years after the service first went online.

Instagram is one of those happy, never-ending stories. The application was launched on iPhone back in October 2010. Less than two years later, the company was purchased by Facebook for about $1 billion.

Now, the image-sharing service has reached an important milestone. According to a recent announcement, more than 100 million people are using Instagram at least once a month. As a result, the service is one of the quickest growing social networking website ever.

More than 100 million people are using Instagram on a monthly basis, making it one of the fastest growing social networking services ever.

Instagram achieves important milestone

After last year’s major and disturbing privacy slander, Instagram demonstrated that it is still going strong, by announcing that the photo-editing and sharing service has reached 100 million active users.

The company is currently offering mobile apps for Android and iOS devices, thus making this achievement even more impressive. For the time being, there are no official Instagram applications for other mobile operating systems, like Windows Phone and BlackBerry.

Co-founder Kevin Systrom sees this as an accomplishment for the community which captures “the world in real-time” with the help of Instagram. Systrom believes that the service is different from others, as it allows people to connect in a way never seen before: through photographs.

Instagram will continue to grow because it is “different”

The photo-sharing app is regarded as an entirely different tool from Facebook because it focuses on the moment. The world’s biggest social networking is about the people, while Instagram allows users to inspire other users from around the world with the amazing power of photography.

Earlier this year, Kevin Systrom announced that the service reached 90 million monthly active users. Adding 10 million more users in a month is quite an achievement for the photo-editing service, which shows that it still has enough room to grow.

For the time being, more than 40 million photos are uploaded on Instagram on a daily basis, while recording 8,500 likes and 1,000 comments each second. This means that its growth does not seem to slow down, despite the aforementioned privacy concerns, triggered by the Terms of Service change.

While some people are doubting the reports that people have left the social networking website after the ToS fiasco, others are wondering whether the service can maintain its growth in the future or not.
