Carl Zeiss to announce three new prime lenses for X and E mounts soon?

Carl Zeiss will announce three new lenses soon with support for Sony’s E-mount and Fujifilm’s X-mount cameras.

Multiple sources have confirmed that Carl Zeiss is working on three new lenses. All of them will be primes and at least a couple of mounts from two different companies are going to be supported.

Usually, Fujifilm camera owners do not expect the Germany-based company to release lenses for X-mount shooters. However, things are about to change thanks to three new prime lenses.

Sources familiar with the matter have revealed that the new products will be very close to current offerings from Fujifilm, though they will provide helpful features like autofocus and aperture controls.

One of the biggest drawbacks of Zeiss’ new optics will be their prices. According to inside sources, each lens will cost at least $1,000 in the United States and more than €1,000 in Europe.

The prime lenses lineup will consist of the 12mm f/2.8, 32mm f/1.8, and 50mm f/2.8 optics. All of them will be unveiled during the same event, which is scheduled to take place in an unknown location in April 2013.

Sony’s current and upcoming full-frame cameras will be compatible with the new primes

Moreover it has been confirmed that the E-mount lenses for Sony’s cameras will feature the same specifications. As usual, they will support full-frame cameras in crop mode, meaning that they will be compatible with the upcoming Sony NEX-9 camera.

For those unaware of the subject, Sony is rumored to announce a full-frame camera with a 24-megapixel image sensor. The so-called NEX-9 will be introduced in April and will be priced higher than the expensive RX1.

As stated above, photographers will have full electronic control over the aperture, which will be a major decision factor for many potential customers.

Even though they are coming from reliable sources, these are just rumors for the moment. Zeiss has yet to announce an event for April, therefore Fujifilm and Sony camera owners will have to wait a little bit longer to see whether they will get their new primes or not.
