Sony is preparing a replacement for the NEX-7 in the body of the NEX-7n. The new mirrorless camera will feature a new 24-megapixel image sensor, 3.8 million-dot EVF, and integrated WiFi.

Sony NEX-7n to become available in less than two years after its predecessor

The NEX-7 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera has been announced in August 2011. The PlayStation maker feels that this is the right time to release an upgrade of the 24-megapixel shooter, says an inside source.

Many of the camera’s specs have already been leaked on the internet, but this has not stopped the rumor mill to be back with fresh details. According to people familiar with the matter, the so-called NEX-7n will be powered by an entirely new 24-megapixel APS-C sensor.

Additionally, the camera will feature 1/2 stop transmission and an enhanced dynamic range. The Sony NEX-7n will also come with a touchscreen, 3.8 million-dot electronic viewfinder, built-in WiFi, Hybrid Contrast support, and Phase Detection AF technology.

Other specifications have been confirmed as well, including Focus Peaking with new set of colors and improved Tri-Navi control system.

Sources bemoan the lack of GPS support and the fact that the Sony NEX-7n has virtually the same form factor as the current-generation NEX-7 camera.

Early April announcement with May availability for the new mirrorless camera

These details are said to come from a reliable source, who has been right in the past. It appears that the mirrorless camera will definitely make an appearance during an event in early April, with retail availability scheduled for May 2013.

Previously, it has been said that the Sony NEX-7n will feature a 1/3 stop better transmission and a brand new internal circuitry. This suggests that the company is testing multiple versions of the camera, in order to determine which one is the best suited for consumers.
