DxOMark has tested the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM lens and has stated that the optic set a new standard when it comes to optical performance.

The DxO Labs technicians managed to put the critically-acclaimed Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM lens under heavy testing. In recent years, DxOMark has become the standard in testing the quality of a lens or of a camera.

Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM trumped the Carl Zeiss Distagon T 35mm f/1.4 lens in DxOMark’s benchmark.

Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM declared the best 35mm wide-angle lens by DxOMark

Sigma promised fast, high-quality lenses for Nikon, Canon, and other cameras. According to DxOMark, the company has duly-delivered, thanks to the aforementioned product, which is said to be the “definitive high-speed 35mm wide-angle lens” for digital cameras.

The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM lens has been tested on a Nikon D800. However, the engineers said that the performance on a Canon camera should be the same.

The lens acquired an overall score of 39, which is the biggest result for a 35mm fixed-focal length optic. This achievement is even more impressive considering the fact that the product costs less than $1,000, meaning that it is one of the cheapest 35mm wide-angle lenses.

The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM lens acquired a sharpness score of 23-megapixel, 1.7 TStop transmission, 0.3% distortion, -1.8EV vignetting, and a chromatic aberration of only 6 micrometers.

The lens trounced its more expensive competitors from Carl Zeiss and Nikkor

According to DxOMark, this lens can perform better than its competitors from Nikkor, Carl Zeiss, and Sony in most scenarios. If it had scored better in vignetting, then it would have been the perfect 35mm lens.

Another advantage of the lens is that it maintains a high-resolution even in the corners of the frame, which is unusual for a product with a fast aperture of f/1.4.

The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM lens outperformed two very expensive lenses, which have been the favorites of many photographers: the Carl Zeiss Distagon T 35mm f/1.4 ZF2 and the AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.4G. The former achieved an overall score of 34 at f/2 aperture, while the latter scored 33 at f/1.4 aperture.

DxOMark noticed that the Carl Zeiss lens loses most of its quality when being used at its maximum aperture. However, Sigma’s product is simply outstanding at f/1.4 aperture.

The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM lens is currently available for purchase at Amazon for both Canon and Nikon mounts. The lens costs $899 for the former, respectively $949 for the latter.
