Canon to announce new PowerShot camera in late summer

Anyway, the Japan-based company keeps doing its job and it seems like it is not going to stop anytime soon. We have heard through the grapevine that a new compact camera with a large image sensor will be announced this summer.

Canon will introduce the apparatus towards the end of the summer, most likely in the second part of August 2013. Despite the fact that many people are expecting the G1X replacement, it seems like the G2X will not show up yet.

New Canon PowerShot camera specs include an APS-C sensor

Sources have also revealed some specifications of the camera. It appears that it will feature an 18-megapixel APS-C image sensor, DIGIC 6 processing engine, and a very fast short zoom lens.

Additionally, it is mentioned that the camera will not sport any kind of optical or electronic viewfinder, meaning that photographers will be forced to rely on the live view mode as usual.

Strong competition ahead meaning that Canon may have to put extra effort into it

Its design will be inspired by the Canon PowerShot S110. Although it will look like it, the new camera will be bigger, in order to provide enough space for the APS-C sensor.

The new Canon PowerShot camera will have powerful competitors, including the Nikon Coolpix A. This device features a 16.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor without an anti-aliasing filter, 18.5mm f/2.8 lens (35mm equivalent of 28mm), 3-inch display, and a continuous mode of 4 frames per second.

The competition will be fiercer than ever as the new PowerShot will join a select club consisting of the Leica X2, Sigma DP1 Merrill, and the Fujifilm X100S among others.
