Raspberry Pi’s $25 Camera Board available for purchase now

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has begun shipping the $25 camera module, which features a 5-megapixel image sensor capable of recording full HD videos.

Earlier this year, in February, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced that it is working on a camera module, which will retail for no more than $25. One month later, in March, the company has revealed that the module will begin shipping sometime in April.

However, the team has decided to continue tweaking the device, in order to make sure that everything will be alright. As a result, the fine tuning has been extended until May. Anyway, the wait is over and the $25 Raspberry Pi camera is now available on the market.

Its official retail name is Raspberry Pi Camera Board. It can be yours for the price of $25, as previously announced. It features a 5-megapixel image sensor provided by OmniVision. The supplier has worked closely with the foundation, so that the best possible modules found their way to Raspberry Pi.

According to the official specs list, the Camera Board can capture 1920 x 1080 videos at 30 frames per second. Additionally, it can record 720p films at 60fps, and 640 x 480 movies at 60p or 90p.

Raspberry Pi Camera Board stock levels are draining fast

The Raspberry Pi Camera Board is available at retailers such as RS Components and Element 14. The latter is also holding a special photo contest, that will see the winners walk away with Raspberry Pi accessories.

Shipment is said to be available worldwide, but it may cost some extra bucks. Even so, the device remains very cheap, meaning that the stock is emptying fast so you might want to hurry up in order to grab a unit or two.

Buyers beware

The Raspberry Pi Camera Board will not work without a Raspberry Pi computer. Users will need to link it to a Model B or Model A. The former is available for $35, while the latter costs $25.

The company also warns users that the module is sensitive to static electricity, meaning that you will have to discharge yourself by touching a metal or something.
