New Canon tilt-shift lenses to be released in early 2014

New Canon tilt-shift lenses are rumored to be released in early 2014, while a couple of EF lenses will make their official appearance by the end of 2013.

Canon is the largest lens manufacturer ever with more than 90 million units shipped. As the EOS maker is feeling Nikon’s hot breathing on its neck, the company needs to release more lenses as a 10 million deficit is easier to overcome than people might think.

In order to further establish its “glass” dominance over Nikon, two new Canon tilt-shift lenses will become available for purchase in the first part of 2014.

Sources have revealed that refreshed versions of the TS-E 45mm and TS-E 90mm optics might be revealed by the end of this year. However, the two products will actually go on sale soon after the New Year’s eve.

Current Canon TS-E 45mm f/2.8 and TS-E 90mm f/2.8 are selling out pretty fast

The specifications of the new optics are unknown, but not too many enhancements are expected. Either way, the lenses should perform better than their predecessors and they might even be more expensive.

Amazon is selling the TS-E 45mm f/2.8 for $1,299, while the TS-E 90mm f/2.8 is available for $1,399. Coincidence or not, the stock levels are pretty low, so some replacements would be welcomed.

Previously, Canon has filed for a patent which consists of aiding photographers with the composition when using TS-E lenses. The new technology would work only in Live View mode or with an electronic viewfinder, but it is worth noting that the patent details are a little bit sketchy, so do no bet all your money on this.

Two new EF optics to be launched by the end of 2013

People familiar with the matter have also confirmed that the Japan-based company will release a couple of EF optics in 2013. Their release date is unknown, but photographers should be able to find them on store shelves during this year’s holiday season.

Although there is no information regarding them, sources are expecting new prime and zoom optics. One of them may well be the rumored EF 35mm f/1.4L II, while the other one could be the EF 16-50mm f/4L IS, which will replace both the 16-35mm f/2.8L II and 17-40mm f/4L.

More details should be revealed in the near future, but until then do not hold your breath over it because it is just gossip talk.
