Sigma is working on a new lens aimed at full frame cameras, the 24-70mm f/2 OS HSM, that could disrupt the market, just like the APS-C-bound 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art.

Sigma has completely surprised a lot of people when it announced the 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art for APS-C cameras. The optic is capable of maintaining its maximum aperture of f/1.8 throughout the zoom range, which is quite an impressive achievement, considering the fact that it is such a wide aperture.

Moreover, it can do so at cheaper prices than what Canon and Nikon have to offer in this department. Soon enough, the company will also provide mounts for Sigma, Pentax, and Sony shooters.

Either way, it seems like full frame camera owners are in for another treat. According to sources familiar with the matter, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2 OS HSM lens is in the works.

The new optic will provide a maximum aperture of f/2 throughout the entire focal length range. Additionally, the price will also be lower than that of its counterparts, but the exact amount remains unknown for now.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II and Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S lenses begin to feel the threat

People familiar with the matter say that the Sigma 24-70mm f/2 OS HSM lens will compete against the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II, which is available for $2,299 at Amazon.

Amazon is currently selling the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S lens for $1,886.95. It would be safe to assume that Sigma’s version will also be cheaper than this one, so Canon and Nikon might be feeling a bad taste in their mouths.

Sigma to launch 24-70mm f/2 OS HSM lens at Photokina 2014

Sigma is rumored to introduce this new product at Photokina 2014. More details have not been provided, but there is plenty of time for that until the fall of 2014.

Meanwhile, the company is also working on a 135mm f/1.8 DG OS Art, as well as a 24mm f/1.4 DG Art optic. These two prime lenses are aimed at full frame cameras, too. However, they should be introduced by the end of 2013, unlike the aforementioned zoom.

Until then, the 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art is available for Canon and Nikon APS-C cameras for $799 at Amazon, while the Sony, Pentax, and Sigma versions should be released soon.

The current Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM AF lens features a wider aperture and it is available for $824 at Amazon for Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sigma, and Sony shooters.
