Following the Lumix GX7 announcement, Panasonic has also introduced the fastest Micro Four Thirds lens ever, the Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2.

Panasonic has demoed the Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 lens at Photokina 2012. However, the product has never really got the chance of getting a proper official introduction.

The Japanese company feels that this is the right time to reveal the optic and to put forth its functionality, as the Lumix GX7 has just been revealed.

Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 lens is the fastest lens designed for Micro Four Thirds cameras. It provides a 35mm equivalent of 85mm and it is aimed at street / portrait photographers.

Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 lens officially announced as fastest Micro Four Thirds lens

The Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 lens has become the fastest interchangeable lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras. Its wide f/1.2 aperture will allow photographers to capture more detail in low-light conditions.

Since it is a Micro Four Thirds optic, it will provide a 35mm equivalent of 85mm, therefore it should be perfect for portrait photography. Nevertheless, street photographers might also be impressed by the capabilities of this product and it may become their first-choice lens later this year.

First Nocticron lens, third one from Leica for Micro Four Thirds cameras

The DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 lens has become the third Leica-branded for MFT shooters. The list is completed by the DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH and the DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH MEGA O.I.S.

Panasonic says that this is the first Nocticron lens to feature a large diameter and to provide such a high performance. This means that we should expect to see more “Nocticron” optics in the near future, though it remains to be seen whether they will sport such fast apertures or not.

More information, including availability details, to be released later this year

Unfortunately, the release date and price details of the Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 lens are close to nonexistent. All that we are told is that it is coming later this year, but we will have to wait to find out when exactly this is going to happen.

The Panasonic GX7 and the 42mm f/1.2 lens might prove to be a killer combination, but the Leica optic is also compatible with Olympus Micro Four Thirds cameras.

If you own an MFT shooter and want a Leica-branded lens right now, then you should go for the DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH, which costs $569 at Amazon, or the DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH MEGA O.I.S, which is available for $719 at the same retailer.
