Apple has announced two new smartphones today, the lower-cost iPhone 5C and the higher-end iPhone 5S, both replacing the iPhone 5.

Today marks the first time Apple has launched two new smartphones on the same day. The company has been expected to do that for quite a while, as both the iPhone 5C and the iPhone 5S have been leaked numerous times before.

Additionally, both of them are said to replace the current-generation iPhone 5. However, the 5C takes the low-cost path, while the 5S is aimed at the high-end market.

iPhone 5C is aiming to be a low-cost iOS 7 smartphone to compete against cheaper Android and Windows Phone devices. It packs almost the same features as the original iPhone, except for the metal body, which has been replaced by plastic.

Apple goes back to plastic with the launch of the new iPhone 5C

The iPhone 5C marks Apple’s return to a plastic body, which will be available in five flavors. The list includes white, blue, pink, green, and yellow. As usual, it is a unibody design so the battery is non-removable.

The specs sheet includes an 8-megapixel sensor on the back and a FaceTime HD camera in the front. The smartphone will be powered by a dual-core A6 processor which runs on the iOS 7, meaning that the 5C will support all photography-related features introduced in the company’s latest mobile operating system.

In the connectivity department, users will find WiFi, LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, and GPS among others. iPhone 5C borrows the touchscreen from its predecessor, meaning that it measures 4 inches and provides a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels.

Finally, the iPhone 5S does not represent a major overhaul over “5”. However, the new smartphone is packing a 64-bit dual-core A7 processor, iOS 7, and a brand new camera, while the touchscreen remains unchanged.

Apple has increased the size of the 8-megapixel sensor and has added a better image stabilization technology, while the aperture now stands at f/2.2 This translates into improved low-light capabilities and higher-quality photos overall.

The iPhone 5S also comes packed with a burst mode of up to 10fps. Additionally, the camera has a slow motion mode, which clocks in at 120fps, beside being able to shoot full HD movies and panorama photos.

iPhone 5S is the flagship iOS 7 smartphone with a new dual-core A7 CPU, fingerprint reader, bigger 8-megapixel sensor, 120fps slow motion mode, and larger f/2.2 aperture.

Touch ID fingerprint reader keeps your new iPhone locked and safe

The biggest novelty in the new iPhone is the so-called Touch ID. The Cupertino-based company has added a fingerprint reader directly into the smartphone’s home button.

It is an extra security measure, as passcodes are easier to crack and since nobody else has the same set of fingerprints, enabling this feature will ensure that no one will be able to unlock your 5S.

There is no NFC support, which might be a downside for digital camera owners, as more and more shooters have this capability. However, the front-facing camera shoots 1920 x 1080 videos, meaning that you will video chat in full HD.

Availability information regarding Apple’s both new iPhones

iPhone 5C and 5S will become available on September 20 with pre-orders starting as of September 13. The low-end 5C will be released in 16GB and 32GB versions for $99 and $199, respectively, with a new two-year contract.

On the other hand, the iPhone 5S will be sold in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models for $199, $299, and $399, respectively, with two-year agreements. However, the back cover will not be made of plastic, as the new version retains its metal traits. As for the colors, users will choose between black or white fronts, and gray, silver, or gray covers.
