Its name and most of the specifications have remained a mystery. The latter part continues to remain like this. As for the former, inside sources are reporting that the device will go by the name of Panasonic GM1, when it finally becomes official next month.

This will come as a huge surprise to some industry watchers, as the company is currently making a lot of G-related series of shooters, such as G, GF, GH, and GX. Adding a new GM line would take the total up to five and consumers might find this confusing.

The person who has leaked this information has also had to say a few things about its design. Apparently, the camera is a lot smaller than most people would have thought.

It appears that Panasonic GM1 will look a lot like the Sony RX100, which is more compact than the GF3. The RX100 measures 101.6 x 58.1 x 35.9mm, while the GF3 is sized at 107.7 x 67.1 x 32.5. Amazon is selling the RX100 for $598.

Sony’s camera weighs a total of 240 grams and Panasonic’s GF3 weighs 319 grams with accessories and a 14mm f/2.5 pancake lens included. The exact measurements of the GM1 will be determined when the camera becomes official. The GF3 is selling for $199 at the same retailer.

GM1 to become first Micro Four Thirds camera with an electronic shutter

Panasonic GM1 is rumored to be the first Micro Four Thirds camera to use an electronic shutter. All such devices have previously used a mechanical shutter. This will provide faster shutter speeds, considering the lack of moving parts that would slow down the system.

The Japan-based company is rumored to launch the MFT shooter in three color combinations: all black, black with silver touches, and brown with silver touches.

The GM1 is rumored to be launched alongside a new 12-32mm pancake zoom lens this October, while the Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 price will be revealed, too.
