Zeiss FE 70-200mm f/4 OSS lens will join the list of E-mount full frame optics that will be announced alongside the Sony A7 and A7R cameras on October 16.

The back story on this one is well-known among people who are closely watching the digital camera industry. Sony is preparing to announce a couple of full frame cameras with E-mount support, called A7R and A7R.

The company’s current NEX optics are compatible with the upcoming cameras, but the system will work in crop mode, which kind of misses the point. This means that Sony will have to launch lenses especially designed to work with full frame sensors.

It has already been speculated that at least four units will be revealed alongside the A7 and A7R mirrorless shooters, with six models being a strong possibility. Well, the list of confirmations has just increased to five, as the Zeiss FE 70-200mm f/4 OSS lens has joined the party.

Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 is an A-mount lens. The Japanese company will not make one for the NEX-FF cameras, instead choosing to leave it up to Zeiss, which will manufacture an f/4 version.

Zeiss FE 70-200mm f/4 OSS lens is rumored to be announced along with the Sony A7 and A7R

A photo of the Sony A7R and A7 being the centerpieces of an event hall has recently appeared on the web. Five lenses can be seen in front of the pair, fact which backs up the information coming from the rumor mill.

The Zeiss FE 70-200mm f/4 OSS will probably not be available immediately. Instead, the optic, which will provide a constant maximum aperture of f/4 throughout the zoom range, will be released during the first weeks of 2014.

Its price is unknown, but photographers should not expect it to retail for a low amount. After all, this is Zeiss and it is not like the German manufacturer offers very many budget-friendly products.

Four other lenses will join the Sony NEX-FF line-up

Sony will bring one lens to the table: the 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 G, which may be the kit model. On the other hand, Zeiss will add three more optics beside the aforementioned one.

The list engulfs the FE 24-70mm f/4 OSS, FE 35mm f/2.8, and FE 55mm f/1.8. Of these, the first is expected to become available for purchase in the first part of 2014 as a more expensive and powerful version of Sony’s 28-70mm.

All of this information should become official during the October 16 event. The cameras and most lenses will probably be released this November, but stay tuned to make sure that you catch all the details.
