Olympus Stylus 1 compact camera finally announced

Olympus has finally announced the Stylus 1, a compact camera that is said to bring together DSLR features, long zoom lens prowess, and portability for an affordable price.

The rumor mill has been talking about a mini Olympus OM-D-like camera for several weeks. The device has had its photos and specs leaked, but now it is time to put all these behind us, as the premium compact shooter has become official under the name of Stylus 1.

Olympus announces Stylus 1 compact camera with OM-D E-M5 design and features

Olympus has taken the design of the OM-D E-M5 and has transmitted it into the Stylus 1. The new compact camera even gets the built-in electronic viewfinder from the Micro Four Thirds shooter, allowing photographers to frame shots as professionals.

The Japanese company says that the Stylus 1 combines DSLR-like performance thanks to a 1/1.7-inch-type 12-megapixel BSI CMOS image sensor and TruePic VI image processing engine with the brilliance of a 35mm format equivalent lens of 28-300mm and a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the zoom range.

Additionally, the 10.7x zoom optic provides integrated VCM stabilization technology that reduces shakes and blur, which is great for macro shots or when using the long end of the lens’ focal range.

Olympus Stylus 1 combines an electronic viewfinder with a tilting LCD touchscreen

The technical details of the built-in electronic viewfinder reveal that this is based on LCD technology with a 1.15x magnification and 100% coverage.

Olympus Stylus 1 will use the built-in 3-inch 1.04-million-dot LCD touchscreen as a viewfinder. However, the EVF on top of the shooter has an eye sensor and will switch to it when it senses that the photographer is looking through it.

The touchscreen LCD is useful when capturing videos as it is also tiltable, allowing you to frame shots from awkward angles. The compact camera offers Fast Touch AF support for very quick focusing when using the tilting display.

Lens cap automatically retracts when camera is not in use

One of the most exciting features of the new Olympus Stylus 1 consists of its automatic lens cap. When the camera is not in use, the cap will automatically cover the lens to protect it .

This is a compact shooter therefore its dimensions are relatively small. It measures 4.57 x 2.64 x 2.24-inches and weighs 14.18 ounces.

The lens retracts into the camera so this device is touted as a pocketable one that fits in the pocket of your coat.

WiFi is now a “must have” feature for photographers

The Olympus Stylus 1 specs list continues with an autofocus assist lamp and 25 focus points, 1/2000-60 seconds shutter speed range, built-in flash, hot shoe for attaching external accessories, manual and auto scene modes, and a self-timer.

The Japanese company has confirmed that its new premium compact camera is capable of recording 1920 x 1080 videos at 30 frames per second.

In-camera RAW image processing is a welcomed feature, too, allowing Olympus to compare this compact to a full-sized DSLR.

Stylus 1 fares well in the connectivity department as well. It has USB 2.0 and HDMI ports, as well as built-in WiFi. It can be connected to a smartphone and transfer files from its SD card to the mobile device’s internal memory in a heartbeat.

Release date, price, and availability details

Olympus Stylus 1 release date has been scheduled for late November or early December 2013. The price of the compact shooter has been set at $699.99.

Amazon has begun accepting pre-orders for the price of $699 with a November 28 shipping date.

Photographers who want to expand their creative possibilities can choose to purchase a TCON-17x 1.7x teleconverter, which will extend the 35mm equivalent to 510mm. This accessory will be available for $199.99.
