The new SLR Magic HyperPrime 17mm T1.6 lens is now official for Micro Four Thirds cameras. It will provide a 35mm equivalent of 34mm and it is coming by the end of the year.

Without any further introduction, SLR Magic has announced the expansion of its lenses for Micro Four Thirds cameras with the launch of the HyperPrime 17mm T1.6 wide-angle optic.

The new model joins the other six focal lengths, in order to take it to a total of seven compatible with the MFT mount. The list includes the 12mm T1.6, 23mm f/1.7, 25mm T0.95, 26mm f/1.4 “Toy”, 35mm T0.95, and 50mm f/0.95 units.

Perfect lens for architectural and street photography, says SLR Magic

The SLR Magic HyperPrime 17mm T1.6 lens is made out of 12 elements divided into 10 groups. It features a manually-controlled aperture ring with 10 blades. The minimum aperture stands at 16 for those who want an extended depth of field.

The filter mount measures 52mm, while its diameter stands at 56.3mm. Its length is sized at 78.65mm and its total weight reaches 340 grams / 12 ounces.

The company promises that the design and build of the new 17mm T1.6 optic are of high-quality, just like the ones of all other models.

When attached to a Micro Four Thirds camera, the lens will provide a 35mm equivalent of 34mm. This means that photographers can get back to the roots of street photography with the help of this focal length.

Release date set for December 2013

SLR Magic has begun shipping the new HyperPrime 17mm T1.6 lens to its partners. However, retailers will start selling it at the end of December to give the company enough time to replenish the stocks.

Although Micro Four Thirds photographers would have liked to hear the final price, the manufacturer has failed to deliver.

The 12mm T1.6 version costs $599 at Adorama. The same retailer is selling the 25mm T0.95 for $799, while the 50mm f/0.95 is available for $1,099, so the new 17mm model will not cost more than a few hundred dollars with taxes and shipping included.
