Cosina announces Voigtländer Nokton 25mm f/0.95 Type II lens

Cosina has announced the Voigtländer Nokton 25mm f/0.95 Type II lens which features a clickless aperture and a release date set for March 2014.

Voigtländer Nokton lenses are something to drool over, as they usually provide very bright apertures. In this case, photographers can set it at a maximum of f/0.95, allowing them to capture great photos in low-light conditions without slowing down the shutter speed.

The Voigtländer Nokton 25mm f/0.95 Type II lens is now official, as Cosina has just announced it for Micro Four Thirds cameras. It consists of a revised version of the original model and it comes packed with an important new feature: clickless aperture.

Cosina has initially introduced a Voigtländer Nokton 25mm lens with a clicking aperture. This means that the aperture is set physically, making a clicking sound when users tune it up or down an f-stop.

The sound is not very video-friendly, and the changing mechanism is not either. Photographers have called out to Cosina and asked it to update this ultra-fast prime optic by adding a clickless aperture.

The company has answered the call and the new aperture ring on the Voigtländer Nokton 25mm f/0.95 Type II lens allows photographers to change the aperture from clicking to clickless and vice-versa.

This means that the f-stops can now be set electronically. It is quite useful for videographers and will certainly be appreciated by Panasonic GH4 owners, who would not want to have their 4K videos ruined by the sound of changing apertures.

New Voigtländer Nokton 25mm f/0.95  lens will provide 35mm equivalent of 50mm

Voigtländer Nokton 25mm f/0.95 Type II lens is made out of 11 elements in 8 groups. The optic features a 10-bladed iris diaphragm with a minimum aperture of f/16. It does not feature autofocus support, so you will have to rely on manual focusing.

The lens can focus at a minimum distance of only 17 centimeters / 6.69-inches. The optic will provide a 35mm equivalent of 50mm for Micro Four Thirds owners.

Cosina says that the new 25mm f/0.95 weighs only 435 grams / 0.96lbs, so it will not add very much weight to mirrorless cameras. It measures 70mm in length and 61mm in diameter and its filter thread is sized at 52mm.

The release date of the Voigtländer Nokton 25mm f/0.95 Type II lens has been set for March 2014. It will cost around $1,000 when it arrives in the US.
