A patent describing a Fujifilm XF 85-300mm f/2.7-3.7 lens has been leaked on the web and could be the super telephoto zoom lens that the company promised to bring to the market in the future.

Earlier this year, Fujifilm has introduced the first weathersealed camera of the X-series. It is called Fujifilm X-T1 and it comes packed with a slew of great features for photographers who do not back down regardless of the environment conditions.

During the launch event of the X-T1, Fuji has promised to release at least four new lenses in the near future. The focal lengths and maximum aperture are official for two of them.

On the other hand, all we know about the other two lenses is that one is a high-speed wide-angle lens, while the other one is a super-telephoto zoom lens. The former is coming sooner and the latter could have its release date pushed back to early 2015.

Either way, we may have discovered the focal length and maximum aperture ranges of the super-telephoto zoom lens, courtesy of a leaked patent.

The internal design of the Fujifilm XF 85-300mm f/2.7-3.7 lens as seen in the leaked patent files. This super-telephoto zoom lens could be released by early 2015.

According to the patent spotted on the web, the Fujifilm XF 85-300mm f/2.7-3.7 lens is the super-telephoto zoom model that is scheduled to become available in late 2014 or early 2015.

When the 85-300mm optic comes to the market, it will offer a 35mm focal length equivalent of 127.5-450mm. Additionally, it will become the longest lens available for the X-series cameras, taking over the crown from the XC 50-230mm f/4.5-6.7 OIS (providing a 35mm equivalent of 75-345mm).

The maximum aperture is what anybody would want from a telephoto lens. Sports and wildlife photographers will surely be happy to use the f/3.7 aperture when zooming at 300mm.

Rumor mill has previously predicted an XF 120-400mm lens for X-series cameras

As expected, the official Fujifilm X-series lens line-up remains unchanged. The focal length of the telephoto optic has not been officially mentioned in the roadmap, yet.

Later this year, photographers will be able to purchase the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R OIS WR and the XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R OIS WR lenses. Both are weathersealed and will feature a constant maximum aperture throughout the zoom, standing at f/2.8.

A previous rumor has stated that the super-telephoto zoom model will consist of a 120-400mm model. The previous rumor is not too far off the patent, so it would not be a surprise if such a lens becomes official towards the end of this year.
