Pentax Z medium format camera aka 645DII teaser hits the web

Pentax has begun teasing the announcement of a camera codenamed “Z”, which allegedly features a 50-megapixel CMOS medium format sensor and is replacing the 645D.

The battle in the medium format range is currently waging between Hasselblad, Phase One, and Pentax. These companies are currently receiving the most attention when it comes to the medium format camera market.

After both Hasselblad and Phase One have announced MF shooters with 50-megapixel CMOS sensors, Pentax has been left out in the cold. At the beginning of the year, the company has said that a successor for the 645D is coming at the CP+ 2014 along with an official announcement.

Unfortunately, the Pentax 645D replacement has not showed up. Thankfully, though, the company has started teasing the launch of a device called “Z” on its website, which is most likely the 645DII.

Pentax Z
Pentax Z teaser is now available on the company’s website. A countdown is there, too, which will run out on April 15.

Pentax’s teaser says that the Z shooter features a “distinct format” and an “unmistakable brilliance”. These two statements are clearly hinting at the medium format range.

In the teaser we can see a small glimpse of what the camera will look like and it certainly appears to be the device seen in the photos that the company itself posted on the web earlier this year.

The launch event might include other things in addition to the MF shooter. A new mirrorless camera and a Q-mount telephoto macro lens could also join the party, although most eyes will be focused on the Pentax 645DII.

Pentax 645D replacement aka 645DII aka Z to feature 50-megapixel CMOS sensor and tilting screen

The Pentax Z medium format camera teaser is also offering a countdown. If the math is not failing us, then the product launch event will take place in about 12 days, starting at the time of publishing this article.

This means that industry watchers will have to tune back in on April 15 when the Pentax introduces its first MF camera with a CMOS sensor and, most likely, a new zoom lens for medium format devices.

All MF cameras used to feature image sensors based on CCD technology. Things have changed this year when Sony has released a 50-megapixel CMOS medium format sensor, which is already available in the Hasselblad H5D-50c and the Phase One IQ250.

Additionally, the Pentax 645D successor will sport a tilting LCD screen as well as a very fast autofocus speed. For the rest of the specs, we will see you on April 15.
