New Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 IS lens patent revealed in Japan

Canon has patented a new 24-70mm f/2.8 lens for EF-mount DSLR cameras. This model is different from the ones currently available as it features an image stabilization system.

It is easier to carry around a zoom lens rather than three primes, for example. The choice becomes painless when the zoom lens in question is cheaper than the three primes, while also offering a constant maximum aperture throughout its zoom range.

One of the most welcomed Canon standard zoom lenses is the 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, while its predecessor is also praise-worthy.

Both are still being sold by Amazon and continue to gather positive reviews. However, they have one major shortcoming and it seems like the Japanese company is looking to correct it by patenting a new 24-70mm lens.

Canon patents image-stabilized 24-70mm f/2.8 lens

Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens might get a sibling or even a replacement soon, as the company has patented an image-stabilized version of the lens in Japan.

Japanese sources have discovered a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 IS lens patent. It describes an image-stabilized optic for the company’s full frame DSLR cameras.

The addition of IS technology will make this a complete lens, allowing users to compensate for camera shakes and to avoid capturing blurry shots.

The new 24-70mm lens by Canon offers an image height of 21.64mm. As for its physical dimensions, it appears that the optic will measure 223.94mm – 207.87mm – 180.56mm depending on the selected focal length.

As stated above, the maximum aperture remains unchanged regardless of the focal length, so it may prove to be a great lens when photographers are looking for a shallow depth of field.

This is Canon’s fourth patent for a new 24-70mm f/2.8 lens

It is not the first time that Canon has patented an image-stabilized 24-70mm lens. During the past couple of years the company has patented three other similar optics.

This one’s internal configuration consists of 18 elements split into 13 groups. These details are not identical to what we have seen in the past, but it is natural for the company to test multiple designs.

The patent’s discovery does not mean that Canon will release this lens in the near future. The rumor mill has not confirmed that such optic is coming, so you might as well turn your attention to what you can buy right now.

Amazon is selling the original 24-70mm f/2.8L USM for less than $1,800, while the newer 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM for under $2,300.
