Sony RX200 is rumored to be announced this summer and to feature a 35mm f/1.8 lens, while becoming the world’s first consumer camera with a curved image sensor.

Sony continues to sell one of the best compact cameras on the market. It is called RX1R and it features a fixed-lens made by Zeiss as well as an image sensor without an anti-aliasing filter in order to increase sharpness and image quality, although risking to be affected by moiré patterns.

Recently, we have found out that the Japan-based company has patented a 10-36mm f/1.8-2.8 OSS lens for 1-inch-type image sensors. This optic would provide a 35mm equivalent of 28-100mm and it is certainly destined for the RX100 Mark II replacement, called RX200.

The RX1 and RX100 series cameras are usually announced together, so it would make sense for their replacements to become official alongside each other. The rumor mill is now claiming that the RX2 will also be unveiled soon and will be released sometime this summer.

The Sony RX1R replacement is rumored to be the RX2, a compact camera that is coming this summer with an industry-first curved full frame image sensor.

A source is claiming that Sony will launch an RX2 compact camera with a full frame sensor and will release it to the market during the summer of 2014.

While its release date does not come as a surprise, the Sony RX2 specs will surely take the digital imaging world by storm, just like the QX10 and QX100 Cyber-shot lens-style cameras.

According to the latest information, the RX1R replacement will come packed with a curved image sensor. The company has already patented such sensor and the RX2 would become the world’s first consumer camera to offer such treat.

The advantages of curved sensors are pretty great on paper. Industry experts are claiming that lens performance would increase greatly in such cases, while the sensitivity at the edge of the sensor would be doubled, resulting in improved low-light photos.

Sony to put a 35mm f/1.8 fixed lens into the RX1/RX1R replacement

The Sony RX2 will once again feature a fixed lens as most conventional compact cameras. Moreover, the lens would sport a fixed focal length of 35mm, just like the RX1 and RX1R. However, the improvement here is in the maximum aperture which will be set at f/1.8.

Naysayers should be aware that Sony has also patented a 35mm f/1.8 lens for curved full frame image sensors. All the pieces of the puzzle are falling together and the company has demonstrated its ability to innovate, so it should not be a surprise if a camera with a curved sensor comes to the market courtesy of Sony

We are anxiously waiting to see how this story unfolds, but those of you who cannot wait can purchase the RX1 at Amazon for less than $2,800, while the RX1R is available at the same retailer for an identical price.
