Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens becomes official

After announcing its first lens of 2014, Canon has also revealed the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM, which has become the company’s second optic of the year.

The rumor mill has recently revealed that Canon will announce a couple of wide-angle zoom lenses soon. The future is here as the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens has been unveiled, seconds after the EF-S 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens announcement.

This optic is here as a cheaper version of an existing lens with a brighter aperture, but a new model that offers an important advantage: image stabilization system. As a result, the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM lens is now joined by the new EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM.

Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens has just been unveiled. It will be released this June for EOS DSLR cameras with full frame sensors.

Having recently manufactured the 100 millionth EF lens in its history, Canon is aiming to increase this number rapidly with the launch of the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM version.

This wide-angle zoom lens does not feature an aperture as bright as the one of its sibling, but the optical image stabilization technology will provide up to four stops of light.

It has been designed for EOS full frame cameras, such as the 5D Mark III. It is said to be a light and small lens, which is always great when working with large camera bodies as it helps reducing the load.

The company says that it has a dedicated processor for the optical image stabilization technology, which is quite smart. According to the press release, the system will tell the difference between panning and capturing photos regularly.

New wide-angle zoom lens coming this summer for an affordable price

The internal construction of the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens consists of a trio of Glass-Molded (GM0) aspherical elements as well as another extra large aspherical element.

These elements are there to correct optical flaws and they will receive help from a pair of Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) elements. The result consists of reduced chromatic aberrations, improved contrast, and high image quality throughout the zoom range.

Canon’s latest lens comes with full-time manual focus mode, although smooth and quiet autofocusing is provided by the USM ultrasonic motor. The optic measures 4.44-inches / 113mm in length and 3.25-inches / 83mm in diameter, while weighing 3.16 lbs / 615 grams.

The release date of this product has been set for June 2014 and a price tag of $1,199, which is $300 cheaper than the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM model (after rebate) at Amazon.
