Canon is rumored to announce a new L-designed lens in the following months and it seems like the “chosen one” is the replacement for the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM model.

This has to be one of the most rumored lenses ever! A Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens replacement should have been unveiled a long time ago, sources say.

The product has been in the pipeline for years, but it has failed to show up on the market due to unknown reasons. Its time may have finally come as the Japan-based company is preparing a new product launch event with an L-designated lens in the spotlights. According to inside sources, the new L-designed model is the successor of the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM.

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens will be replaced in Q3 2014 with a new model that will not feature a push-pull zooming system.

A trusted source who has been right in the past has revealed that the next Canon announcement that will involve an L lens will consist of a replacement for the highly-praised 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 optic.

The current version is selling very well, so this could be a reason why the Japanese manufacturer has delayed a successor for so long.

At Amazon, this lens has a rating of 4.7 stars out of 5 stars. The price of this telephoto zoom lens may have played a role in the rating, as now it stands at around $1,500, courtesy of a $200 post-purchase rebate.

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens successor coming in August or at Photokina 2014

Canon will announce the new 100-400mm lens alongside the replacement for the 7D. If the two are not launched together, then their announcement dates will surely happen in quick succession.

The Canon 7D Mark II could be revealed at the Photokina 2014, so the L-designated optic might become official during the same event or perhaps sooner in August.

The price of the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens successor will be bigger than the one of its predecessor. It seems like the company will get rid of the push-pull zooming technique and will add a zoom ring to this product.
