The fifth month of 2014 has provided plenty of official announcements, consisting of new cameras and lenses and the rumor mill has been spreading gossip talks about numerous upcoming products. All-in-all, here are the most important things that happened during May 2014!

Sony takes the wraps off of the RX100 III and reveals details about future plans

The month began with Sony, which announced the development of the Zeiss FE-16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS lens aimed at the company’s full frame mirrorless cameras.

The PlayStation maker has also revealed a replacement for the RX100 II in the body of the RX100 III. The new compact camera sports improved image processor, new lens with a 35mm focal length equivalent of 24-70mm and a maximum aperture of f/1.8-2.8 as well as a built-in pop-up electronic viewfinder.

Additionally, the availability details of the A7S FE-mount camera have become official, while the FE PZ 28-135mm f/4G OSS lens has showed up at an event in Japan.

Canon and Nikon have made a couple of very different announcements

Canon has launched two wide-angle lenses in mid-May. The EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens is aimed at APS-C-sized DSLR cameras, while the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM is a higher-end model designed for full frame EOS DSLRs.

Nikon has also launched a new lens for FX-format cameras. The AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR is now official and will be released for a hefty price tag this summer.

On the rumors side, Fujifilm, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, and Olympus have all made the headlines when it comes to gossip talks.

Fujifilm has discontinued the X20 in order to make room for the X30, which is said to become official on July 3. Other products in Fuji’s pipeline are the 35mm f/1.4 and 90mm f/2 lenses, a medium format camera, the X-Pro2 and the X200.

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS IS is rumored to be replaced by the SX60 HS IS in the near future.

Canon will also hold some product launch events in the near future. The sought-after PowerShot SX60 HS IS bridge camera should have been revealed by now, but it seems like its launch date has been delayed. Nevertheless, it is coming soon, so remain patient for a while. The 7D Mark II will be tested at the 2014 World Cup, while the 1D X replacement will be announced in late 2014 or early 2015 and the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens is allegedly coming in the next few months.

Nikon will announce the D800/D800E successor, called D800s, in late June. The DSLR will feature a similar sensor, built-in GPS, and improved autofocus performance among others.

Panasonic is said to introduce the LX8 high-end compact camera on July 16, while some new lenses are expected to be released at the Photokina 2014.

Sony A99 and Sony NEX-5T cameras will be discontinued this summer, sources said. Their replacements are coming this fall, they added.

The full specs of the Olympus E-PL7 Micro Four Thirds camera have been leaked on the web, amid rumors that the device will be announced soon. Additionally, it seems like the company is working on an OM-D full frame mirrorless camera which is coming this fall.
