Nikon is rumored to add a fluorine coating to all of the company’s high-end telephoto lenses, a list that includes at least five models allegedly getting replaced within two years.

Nikon announced a new telephoto lens in mid-May. The new 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens replaces the old version with a fluorine coating, less weight, and other features to increase the quality of this product. Nevertheless, the new model is more expensive than its predecessor and it seems like this is the exact thing we can expect from Nikon within the next two years.

Nikon will add a fluorine coating to all of its telephoto lenses in order to make them more resistant to dirt, dust, grease, and water droplets.

All new high-end Nikon telephoto lenses will feature fluorine coating

The Japan-based corporation first introduced a fluorine coating into the Nikkor 800mm f/5.6, a lens unveiled during the summer of 2012.

The second telephoto optic to boast such coating is the aforementioned AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens. All optics with a fluorine coating will employ the “FL” designation and it appears that we will see plenty of them launched over the next couple of years.

An inside source is reporting that all high-end Nikon telephoto lenses will feature fluorine coating and that they will be announced in the “next 1-2 years”.

Nikon to replace 200mm, 300mm, 500mm, 600mm, and 200-400mm lenses within two years

There are five new models that still need to be replaced almost all of them having serious stock “issues” at retailers. The list includes the 200mm, 300mm, 500mm, 600mm, and 200-400mm.

Amazon is no longer selling new units of the Nikon 200mm f/2G AF-S ED VR II lens, although refurbished or used units can still be purchased. Additionally, the Nikon 500mm f/4G ED VR AF-S SWM lens is back-ordered and will ship sometime within two to four weeks of your purchase.

The Nikon 300mm f/2.8G AF-S ED VR II lens is available for about $5,800, but there is only one unit left in stock.

As for the 200-400mm f/4G AF-S SEM SIC ED IF VR II and the 600mm f/4G ED VR II AF-S SWM lenses, Amazon is still selling them, but there are few units left in stock. They are expensive models and they are harder to sell, so there is no point in keeping very many units in stock.

What is Nikon’s fluorine coating?

Nikon has an informative video regarding its fluorine coating that is being added to its 400mm and 800mm lenses. This coating consists of a surface that is added in the front of the lenses and turns it into a hydrophobic surface.

The coating will allow the lens to repel water, grease, dirt, and dust particles. Telephoto optics are usually used by wildlife and sports photographers, meaning that the shooting conditions are sometimes harsh and dirt can adhere to the lens, making the glass very hard to clean.

Thankfully, this coating makes the lens easier to clean and a lot more durable over time because external factors are not damaging it. Furthermore, since it is cleaned with so much ease, users will no longer risk damaging the lens during the cleaning process.
