Nikon D800s camera could become official next week

Nikon will hold a product launch event next week in order to announce the D800s, a DSLR camera with a big-megapixel full frame sensor that will replace both the D800 and D800E.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Nikon would introduce a new Coolpix compact camera with a 1-inch-type sensor. The model was said to be a high-end one that would compete against the Sony RX100 III and other upcoming cameras from Fujifilm and Panasonic.

However, it seems like this is no longer the case, as the Coolpix shooter will be unveiled at a later date. According to inside sources, Nikon’s next announcement consists of the D800s, the sought-after replacement of the D800 and D800E.

Nikon D800s camera’s official announcement set for next week

A source familiar with the matter has found out that Nikon has begun sending invitations to a special event that will take place next week. The Japanese company will announce something “big” and the official press event will take place shortly after the events that will occur far from the eyes of the media.

Nevertheless, the official press announcement might not take place next week, so the D800s could be revealed in its entirety during the week beginning on June 15.

Although the 1-inch-type Coolpix compact camera is also poised to be introduced soon, we will have to wait a little longer for its launch event.

Nikon D800s specs recap

The Nikon D800s will replace both the D800 and D800E. It will feature a similar 36.3-megapixel full frame image sensor as its predecessors, but it will resemble the D800E more because it will not sport an anti-aliasing filter.

The DSLR’s specs list will include an EXPEED 4 or 4A image processor, an LCD screen on the back with a higher resolution than the one of its forerunners, integrated GPS functionality, but no WiFi.

Its autofocus system will be improved and will include four centered AF points. The system will be joined by improved low-light performance and a continuous shooting mode of up to 5fps.

Nikon D800s to be made in Thailand, unlike the Japan-born D800 and D800E

Nikon will manufacture the D800s in Thailand and will sell it for a bigger price than the amount asked for a D800E, which is available for about $3,300 at Amazon. On the other hand, the price of the D800 has gone back up at around $3,000 at the same retailer, as the rebate offer has expired at the beginning of June.
