Sony is once again rumored to be working on a black and white camera with a full frame image sensor, which will be released in late 2014 or early 2015.

At the beginning of 2014, the rumor mill made a rather bold claim: Sony is developing a new camera that features a full frame sensor capable of shooting only black and white photos.

This rumor received little attention and not very many people believed in it. However, Sony-related sources have already demonstrated their abilities to leak reliable details and it seems like this is the case of the new full frame black and white camera.

A person familiar with the matter is claiming that the previously-released details are true and that a Sony full frame CMOS B&W sensor-powered compact camera is in the works and it is on its way.

Sony to release full frame camera with black and white sensor at the end of 2014 / early 2015

leica-m-monochrom Sony black and white camera could be released in late 2014 Rumors

Leica M Monochrom is a full frame camera that captures only black and white photos. Sony could issue a response to Leica’s model by the end of 2014, sources have revealed.

The upcoming Sony black and white camera will actually be a version of the RX1 / RX1R. The image sensor will be based on CMOS technology and will be full frame-sized. Additionally, it will capture photos at a resolution around 24 megapixels.

The exact resolution of the RX1 and RX1R full frame compact cameras stands at 24.3-megapixel. The new sensor will provide an improved frame rate as well as a better signal-to-noise ratio.

Sources are reporting a +6db gain when compared to the color sensor found in the Sony RX1 and RX1R. This would translate in very sharp photos with one of the highest dynamic ranges available on the market.

An exact announcement date has not been provided, yet. However, Sony will release the B&W full frame camera towards the end of 2014 or sometime at the beginning of 2015.

Sony black and white camera will rival the expensive Leica M Monochrom

The reason why Sony is aiming to make this camera consists of the fact that “niche markets are profitable”, the source said.

Leica is still in the business even though its devices are pretty expensive and without attracting lots of customers. The new Sony black and white camera will compete against the Leica M Monochrom, which can be purchased at Amazon for around $7,800.

The M Monochrom features an 18-megapixel CCD sensor and has the ability to swap lenses. By the looks of it, Sony’s model will be a compact camera, but we should not rule out any possibilities.

Take this rumor with a grain of salt and stay tuned!
