Canon has patented four new prime lenses, all featuring a maximum aperture of f/1.4, as the company’s “year of lenses” is still struggling to live up to the hype.

The rumor mill has revealed that Canon will be launching lots of new lenses in 2014, as this will be the company’s “year of the lenses”.

Unfortunately for the manufacturer’s fans, only three lenses have been unveiled so far. The EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM, EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM, and the EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM are Canon’s lenses launched in 2014.

Either way, the Japanese maker has patented plenty of optics this year. The list may be long enough, but there is plenty of room for more. The rumor mill has just discovered four new patents, each describing a prime lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.4.

Canon 55mm f/1.4 lens patented in Japan, may compete against the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 soon

These are the latest Canon prime lens patents. In the top left corner you can see the 55mm f/1.4, while in the top right corner you can see the 35mm f/1.4. On the bottom row there are two versions of the 50mm f/1.4 lens.

Canon may be on the verge of announcing a competitor for the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4. The Canon 55mm f/1.4 lens is on the list of newly-patented optics and its sports a built-in autofocus motor, just like the three other lenses.

This model comes with a length of 100.44mm, which is not very big considering the fact that it may sport a rather complex optical design.

The Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 lens delivers excellent image quality. It can be purchased at Amazon for about $4,000, so Canon’s own version will be a welcomed addition since it will presumably be cheaper.

Canon 35mm f/1.4 lens patented, too, along with two 50mm f/1.4 versions

Another version of the Canon 35mm f/1.4 lens has been patented, too. It sports a length of 126.92mm, which is quite normal for a lens that will definitely employ an elaborate optical construction.

The other two optics of this pack are both 50mm f/1.4 models. They appear to be rather similar, one of them measuring 99.46mm, while other one having a length of 98.17mm.

Canon is already offering 35mm and 50mm f/1.4 lenses. However, they are rather old and you could say that they need to be updated at once.

The 35mm f/1.4 lens is available at Amazon for about $1,500, while the 50mm f/1.4 optic can be bought for a price around $400.

Nevertheless, we should mention that patenting a product does not guarantee its immediate release on the market. This is why you will need to take these details with a pinch of salt and to stay tuned!
