Sony DSC-KW1 compact camera to be announced within days

Sony will allegedly announce a DSC-KW1 compact camera in the near future, which could potentially become the first digital camera with a stacked Exmor RS sensor.

After introducing the A5100, Sony is preparing to make another announcement soon. It appears that the Japan-based manufacturer is planning to bring the Exmor RS sensor technology to its digital camera line-up, courtesy of the so-called DSC-KW1.

This is supposed to be a compact camera and to be launched sometime within days in order to be ready for world’s largest digital imaging event: the Photokina 2014.

These are examples of Sony’s Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensors. They have been available in smartphones for a while and now they will make their way into digital cameras soon.

Sony DSC-KW1 coming soon with 19.2-megapixel Exmor RS sensor

The most packed period of the year has just started with the introduction of the Sony A5100 mirrorless camera. It appears that it will continue with the launch of the DSC-KW1, which will also be made by Sony.

The specs of the compact camera have showed up on the web, revealing that the device will sport an Exmor RS sensor.

Sony KW1 will shoot photos with a 19.2-megapixel 1/2.3-inch-type sensor and a lens that provides a 35mm focal length equivalent of 21mm when shooting in 4:3 aspect ratio and 23mm when shooting in 16:9 aspect ratio.

Its maximum aperture will stand at f/2, so this could be a very good camera for beginner photographers aiming to take shots with bright wide-angle lens.

Sony KW1’s specs list to include WiFi and NFC

The source has been able to reveal that the Sony DSC-KW1 specs list will include built-in optical image stabilization as well as an ND filter. The former will prevent blurry shots, while the latter will allow users to adjust exposure settings when the scene is too bright.

The maximum ISO has not been made public, yet, but the shutter speed range will stand between 2 seconds and 1/8000th of a second.

It does not seems like a viewfinder will be added to the shooter, which means that photographers will rely on the 3-inch 1.23-million-dot LCD screen.

Just like almost all recent Sony cameras, the KW1 will feature WiFi and NFC. All these tools will be available in a body that weighs 136 grams (with the battery and card included) and which measures 125mm x 57.7 x 20.1mm.

What’s an Exmor RS sensor?

Sony announced the Exmor RS sensor technology in 2012. It is the evolution of the Exmor R system and it consists of a stacked CMOS image sensor.

The structure of the sensor involves a unique arrangement within the sensor that puts the back-illuminated pixels on top of the signal processing circuits.

It has been added to smartphones, but it has failed to make its way into a dedicated camera. It remains to be seen whether or not the Sony DSC-KW1 will be the first camera to employ this technology, so stick with us to find out!
