Canon 7D Mark II finally revealed at Photokina 2014

Canon has announced the 7D Mark II, which has become the company’s flagship EOS camera with an APS-C sensor by taking the place of the aging 7D at Photokina 2014.

The most rumored camera of the recent years is finally official. Canon has decided to stop people from speculating by introducing the EOS 7D Mark II with lots of new features that will make photographers forget about the discontinued EOS 7D.

Canon introduces EOS 7D Mark II DSLR with new AF system, image processor, and more

Just like its predecessor, the Canon 7D Mark II introduces a set of new features, which are not available in other EOS cameras. Among the novelties, we can find the autofocus system and the image processor.

According to the company, the 7D Mark II employs a 65-point AF system that consists only of cross-type points, allowing the DSLR to focus very quickly in all shooting conditions.

Moreover, the shooter features a new 150K-pixel RGB+IR 252-zone metering sensor, which is more precise in determining what is happening in front of the camera.

The flagship EOS APS-C DSLR features dual DIGIC 6 processors that enable a burst mode of up to 10fps for 31 RAW shots and 1,090 large fine JPEGs, respectively, thanks to a large buffer.

On the other hand, the image sensor appears to have been borrowed from the EOS 70D. The Canon 7D Mark II comes with a 20.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor with Dual Pixel CMOS AF support.

The latter technology will allow the camera to focus very fast when using the Live View instead of the optical viewfinder.

As usual, the DSLR has a weather-resistant construction that withstands dusty and other adverse environments. Its body is very sturdy, courtesy of magnesium alloy materials.

The shutter is said to have been tested up to 200,000 cycles, which is about 30% longer than 7D’s capacity.

Second-generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology makes its way into the 7D Mark II

The aforementioned Dual Pixel CMOS AF system has reached its second generation. Canon says that 7D Mark II users will be able to make adjustments to the AF speed and AF tracking sensitivity in Movie Servo mode.

The Japan-based company has also confirmed that face detection is now more accurate, while the AF system is much faster even in low-light conditions or when focusing on subjects with low-contrast.

The connectivity department includes built-in GPS to geo-tag photos, USB 3.0 for speedy file transfer, and a microHDMI port. Content will be stored on dual SD / CF memory cards.

Canon’s new flagship EOS APS-C camera supports ALL-I and IPB codecs

Canon 7D Mark II comes packed with a 100-16000 ISO sensitivity range, which can be expanded to a maximum of 51,600. The shutter speed stands between 1/8000th of a second and 30 seconds.

On the back of the new EOS DSLR, users will find a 3-inch 1.04-million dot LCD screen and an optical viewfinder with a 100% coverage.

The camera can record high quality videos, too. Canon says that it can shoot full HD videos at up to 60fps with stereo audio, support for ALL-I and IPB codecs, and embedded time code compatibility.

A built-in flash is available, but users can connect external Speedlites with support for a flash X-sync speed of 1/250th of a second.
