Nikon is rumored to announce a plethora of new products at the beginning of 2015, including a new premium Coolpix compact camera with a 1-inch-type sensor.

Lately, there has been an influx of “premium” compact cameras. There is an on-going battle in this segment, but this has been expected because the Sony RX100 series has been doing really well in terms of sales.

Fujifilm has launched the X30, Panasonic has introduced the LX100, and Canon has unveiled the G7 X at Photokina 2014 as responses to the Sony RX100 III. However, Nikon has remained silent so far, despite the fact that the rumor mill has been receiving details about such device for a very long time.

According to the latest information, the premium Nikon Coolpix compact camera with a 1-inch-type image sensor is still in development and is expected to be announced at CES 2015 or at CP+ Camera & Photo Imaging Show 2015.

The Nikon Coolpix A is the company’s flagship compact camera. It features a DX-type sensor, but fans are demanding a Coolpix compact with a smaller 1-inch-type sensor.

This camera should have been launched at the Photokina 2014 event, according to the rumor mill. However, the Japan-based company has not delivered such device at the world’s biggest digital imaging trade fair.

The good thing is that the wait will not be extended for much longer. In fact, the premium Nikon Coolpix compact camera is now believed to become official in early 2015.

The first major events of the year are the CES 2015, taking place in January, and the CP+ Camera & Photo Imaging Show 2015, taking place in February, so we can expect the shooter to drop around these shows.

Nikon’s upcoming high-end Coolpix camera will come packed with built-in WiFi and GPS

Sources have also revealed some possible specs of this Nikon Coolpix camera. The device will most likely employ a 1-inch-type image sensor made by Aptina and will be powered by an EXPEED 3 or EXPEED 4 image processor.

Its body will be made out of magnesium alloy and will have a grip that is inspired by the P5100 and P6000 Coolpix compacts. Moreover, it will sport a 35mnm equivalent lens of 24-120mm or 24-80mm, while its maximum aperture will remain constant throughout the zoom range at f/2 or f/1.8.

This premium Nikon Coolpix compact camera will offer a P/A/S/M mode dial and will feature a 3-inch or 3.5-inch LCD screen on its back.

The specs list will be completed by built-in WiFi and GPS, whereas the source claims that the camera will also support Google Maps. As a result, this could be a smart camera powered by Android OS.

The shooter is expected to retail for a price below $1,000, but remember to take this information with a pinch of salt, as usual!
