Canon is rumored to be working on more compact and lightweight DSLRs instead of focusing on mirrorless cameras, as consumers are said to be more interested in size rather than the technology behind a device.

The EOS M series has been a major fail for Canon. The original EOS M has not managed to sell many units and its performance has not met the demands of the users.

The company has improved the shooter via a firmware update. However, sales have not recovered even after the update and a major price reduction. Canon is still not convinced about the mirrorless system, so the EOS M2 camera has been launched in a few Asian markets.

Insiders have leaked details about a possible EOS M3 series, which would consist of two models, but these devices have not showed up, yet. It remains to be seen whether this line-up will still be supported, as the rumor mill is claiming that Canon is developing smaller DSLR cameras instead of mirrorless models.

The Canon Rebel SL1 is the smallest DSLR in the company’s line-up. Rumors are saying that more compact DSLRs are coming, as Canon may not support the mirrorless system for too long.

Compact Canon DSLR cameras are in development as we speak

A new report is stating that Canon has acknowledged that consumers want cameras that are small and lightweight, while offering good features. Mirrorless cameras are certainly fitting the bill. However, it appear that consumers do not care whether a device is a mirrorless or a DSLR as long as it retains its compact form factor.

The source added  that the Rebel SL1 was just the tip of the iceberg, as the Japanese company is putting a lot of effort into developing tiny DSLRs. As the mirrorless segment has failed Canon, it would make sense for the manufacturer to focus on DSLR-like cameras.

Another important information refers to the fact that Canon will preserve the EF and EF-S mounts. This means that its compact DSLRs will be compatible with the current lens line-up.

Next-gen Canon Rebel DSLRs could feature electronic viewfinders

In recent times, the rumor mill has mentioned that the next-generation Rebel cameras will employ an electronic viewfinder instead of an optical viewfinder. This will dramatically reduce the size of the shooters, so you could say that these rumors go hand-in-hand.

As the EF-M mount is slowly fading away, it remains to be seen whether or not these compact Canon DSLR cameras will become a reality.

The rumor mill has also stated that the manufacturer will put 4K in lots of cameras in 2015. The PhotoPlus Expo 2014 is approaching, so we could hear more about the EOS plans soon, while CES 2015 remains the safest bet in this regard.
