Sony is once again rumored to be working on a medium format camera in partnership with Zeiss, while Mamiya is said to launch its own version of the camera.

The latest Hasselblad, Phase One, and Pentax medium format cameras are featuring the same 50-megapixel sensor made by Sony. The companies have acquired the sensor from the PlayStation maker and have modified it to their own liking in order to suit the needs of their medium format systems.

This sensor is proving to be very popular, so lots of people have siad that it would be great if Sony chooses to launch its own MF camera. The wishes of the users are backed up by the rumor mill, which has repeatedly said that the manufacturer is actually developing such device in partnership with Zeiss.

Well, more rumors have just arrived on the web regarding the specs of the camera, along with a confirmation of the fact that Mamiya will also introduce a camera featuring this sensor, like previously said.

Sony and Zeiss to launch medium format camera and lenses soon

The upcoming Sony medium format camera is said to employ a design based on the Mamiya 7II camera. The source has also confirmed that the shooter will sport the popular 50-megapixel CMOS sensor.

Additionally, the specs list will include a built-in electronic viewfinder and a lens mount based on magnets. Photographers will be able to control the settings of the shooter using four dials.

The device will bear the Sony brand and its lenses will come with Sony and Zeiss brands. It is unclear whether the camera employs an existing medium format mount or a new mount will be announced.

Its price tag remains unknown, but there is speculation that it could be lower than the price of its competitors, considering the fact that Sony is manufacturing its own sensor.

More medium format cameras on their way, as Mamiya will release its own 50MP model

There are reasons to believe that Sony and Zeiss have also partnered with Mamiya. For the time being, this is a bit unclear, but the certain thing is that Mamiya is developing its own version of the camera that will feature the same 50MP CMOS image sensor.

However, the Mamiya model will employ an optical viewfinder, albeit it will support focus peaking on an OLED screen. It is said that the same lenses bearing the Sony and Zeiss brands will also show up in the form of Mamiya lenses with magnet attachment.

Controlling the camera is done using four dials, so it sounds like there are not lots of differences between the two shooters.

Although there has been a lot of chatter surrounding this subject, we are advising you to take these Sony medium format camera rumors with a grain of salt.
