46-megapixel Canon DSLR camera could employ Sony sensor

Canon could be using a 46-megapixel full frame image sensor made by Sony in one of its DSLR cameras that will be released sometime by the end of 2015.

Sony is without a doubt the biggest image sensor supplier when it comes to digital cameras for consumers. The company is supplying sensors to a variety of companies, including Nikon.

Recently, the PlayStation maker has sent a 1-inch-type sensor in Canon’s direction. The PowerShot G7 X employs a 20-megapixel Sony sensor, while the rumor mill has begun claiming that more Canon shooters could be powered by Sony sensors in the future, including DSLR cameras.

A new rumor has surfaced, this time claiming that a 46-megapixel Canon DSLR will actually use an image sensor manufactured by its digital imaging rival.

After supplying sensors for compact cameras, Sony might also supply sensors for Canon DSLRs.

At Photokina 2014, Canon has launched the PowerShot G7 X, a premium compact camera with a Sony sensor. A company representative has claimed that although an in-house sensor is always preferred, Canon will always use the best sensor available on the market in a camera.

However, it has been hinted that the Japanese corporation will be using its own sensors in future DSLRs. Well, the rumor mill begs to differ, as there is more and more evidence that the upcoming 46-megapixel Canon DSLR is actually using an image sensor made by the same company which is making PlayStation gaming consoles.

An insider is stating that the Color Filter Array and the image processor will be made by Canon, so only the sensor will be made by Sony. This means that the color accuracy, speed, and other details of the image quality will actually be Canon’s work.

Canon’s big-megapixel DSLR has already been rumored to feature a 46MP sensor

A lot of people are wondering about the destination of the 46-megapixel Sony sensor. Well, the most likely product will be a DSLR. In the past, the rumor mill has said that the Canon 1D X replacement, called 1Ds X or 1D Xs, will employ a 46MP sensor, so all the pieces of the puzzle are fitting this description.

Another possibility would be a competitor for the Nikon D810, placed between the 1D X and 5D Mark III. However, this would mean that the 1D X successor will not be a big-megapixel camera.

Last but not least, Sony is said to launch the A9 full frame mirrorless camera in early 2015. Canon has been rumored to be working on its own FF MILC for a long time, so this could be it.
