Renowned photographer Tim Mantoani is the author of the “Behind Photographs” project, which consists of portraits of legendary photographers posing with their most iconic photos.

Photography has produced a lot of artists who have been able to capture some iconic photos that hundreds of millions of people have seen. More often than not, the photos are more famous than the people who have captured them.

In order to pay a tribute to the artists, renowned photographer Tim Mantoani has created the “Behind Photographs” photo project, which has also turned into the “Behind Photographs: Archiving Photographic Legends” photo book.

This series consists of portraits of photographers holding their iconic photos in their hands captured using a 20×24 Polaroid large format camera.

Tim Mantoani pays a tribute to legendary photographers in the “Behind Photographs” project

The “Behind Photographs” project had its inception back in 2006. Tim Mantoani has decided to document legendary photographers, but not in an usual fashion, so he has rented a 20×24 Polaroid large format camera.

The 20×24 Polaroid is a very rare camera, which weighs more than 100 kilograms (over 230 pounds) and which requires a special tripod to hold it still. As one can image, it is quite expensive to rent, so Tim has decided to use in a special manner.

Either way, the project and these photographers are definitely worthwhile. For the “Behind Photographs” series, Tim is aiming to show the men behind these famous photos, so they are are pictured holding their photos.

Beside posing with their photos, the photographers have also been asked to write something about their shots on the bottom of the prints. During a period of about five years, more than 150 photographers have posed for Tim Mantoani.

About the “Behind Photographs: Archiving Photographic Legends”

Tim Mantoani says that more and more pieces of history are being forgotten, including devices and artists. Although a lot of people have seen some of these iconic photos, the people do not know who created them. The “Behind Photographs: Archiving Photographic Legends” book is putting the artists and their photos in a single image.

Moreover, the 20×24 Polaroid camera may soon become unusable, as production for 20×24 film may soon end. This is why Tim has chosen to shoot using this device.

A list of more than 150 photographers are portrayed in the book, including Steve McCurry, Jeff Widener, David Doubilet, Neil Leifer, and Douglas Kirkland.

The “Behind Photographs: Archiving Photographic Legends” photo book is available for purchase at Amazon, while more details about the project are available at Tim Mantoani’s website.
