Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens could be in development

Sigma is rumored to be working on a new Art-series lens in the body of the 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM, which will compete against the Nikon 85mm f/1.4G and the Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4.

One of the most appreciated series of lenses is Sigma’s “Art”. The line-up consists of fast prime and zoom optics, the most recent unit being the 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM, which was announced a few days before the start of the CP+ 2015 event.

Trusted sources are reporting that the Japan-based company is already working on its next models. Although it may not be the first to come, this unit is said to be on Sigma’s radar. It consists of an 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM, which would be launched for multiple full frame camera mounts.

This is the current Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM lens, which is rumored to be replaced by a new Art-series model sometime in the future.

The rumor mill is claiming that a Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens is in development and that it will be launched sometime in the future.

This optic would join the rest of prime Art optics with a maximum aperture of f/1.4, such as the 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM, 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM, 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM, and the 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM.

It is rumored that the Japanese manufacturer will introduce a 135mm Art model before the 85mm version. However, there are still some doubts about this, as the company’s representatives believe that the 85mm Art would sell better, so it would make sense to focus on this unit rather than the 135mm Art model.

Either way, it is highly unlikely that we will see an official announcement in the following few months, so it is better to take this with a pinch of salt and to stay tuned for more details!

The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens would compete against the Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.4G and the Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 lenses. It would replace the existing Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM, which is available for about $970 at Amazon.

A 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art lens might be on its way, too

Sigma could also choose to launch another zoom lens sooner than a prime model. Currently, the series includes the 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM and the 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM.

The latter is believed to have been taken out of production due to poor sales. Photographers are said to be hesitant to buy this unit because its price is not so much lower when compared to its Canon and Nikon counterparts.

Nevertheless, a 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art lens would make a lot of sense if it is cheaper than the Canon and Nikon models, so we should not act surprised if it becomes official soon.
