Nikon has patented a new 3mm f/2.8 fisheye lens designed for mirrorless cameras with 1-inch-type sensors and a speed booster that widens the focal length of a lens while increasing its maximum aperture.

After announcing the D7200 DSLR and the Coolpix P900 compact, Nikon is hard at work to provide new lens options for its fans. The Japan-based company has patented a fisheye lens for CX-mount mirrorless cameras as well as a speed booster for DX-mount DSLR cameras.

The 3mm f/2.8 fisheye optic has been designed for shooters with 1-inch-type sensors, while the 0.7x speed booster has been developed for DSLRs with APS-C-sized sensors.

The CX-mount lens line-up will be supported for years to come, says Nikon. The company claims that sales of 1-series cameras are going well, so there is no reason not to keep adding products to its CX-mount portfolio.

It appears that one of these products will consist of a Nikon 3mm f/2.8 fisheye lens. A patent for this optic has been discovered in Japan bearing roughly eight elements divided into three groups.

The optic is intended for use with 1-inch-type sensors, which means that it will provide a 35mm focal length equivalent of about 8mm. It will be an ultra wide-angle lens and it will be capable of capturing circular photos, which are growing in popularity on image sharing websites.

The patent was filed on August 14, 2013 and it was published in late February 2015. Although the company is working on this lens, you should not raise your hopes too high for a launch in the near future, so stay tuned!

Nikon has patented a speed booster that can turn a 50mm f/1.4 lens into a 35mm f/1 lens.

The second product patented in recent times by Nikon is a speed booster. This is a special converter, which can be mounted between the camera and the lens. It can widen the focal length, while increasing the maximum aperture of a lens.

A patent application is suggesting that Nikon is developing a 0.7x speed booster, which means that a 50mm lens will turn into a 35mm lens.

Furthermore, if the maximum aperture of the lens sits at f/1.4, then the speed booster will raise up to f/1. This means that this converter can increase the aperture by one full-stop, which is always welcomed by photographers.

Nikon’s speed booster has been be developed for DX-mount DSLR cameras with APS-C-sized sensors. It would be interesting to see this product coming to the market, but we will have to sit back and relax, so do not raise your hopes too high for the time being!
