Sony has announced the three prime lenses that people have been expecting since Photokina 2014. The new FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro, 28mm f/2, and Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 are now official for FE-mount full frame mirrorless cameras along with a few converters.
One of the major complaints that photographers have regarding Sony’s FE-mount is the thin lens line-up. However, the company is beefing up its offer with three new Sony prime lenses and a couple of converters.
The new FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS, FE 28mm f/2, and the Zeiss Distagon T* FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA lenses will be released in the near future, in an attempt to diversify the optical portfolio for photographers using Sony Alpha E-mount mirrorless cameras.
Capture the perfect macro shots with the new Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS lens
As its name is suggesting, the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS lens has been designed for macro photography. This telephoto prime optic will deliver crisp clear images with beautiful out-of-focus backgrounds. It offers 1:1 magnification rate and it comes with a focus ring that allows users to override the autofocus and to switch to manual focus in an instant.
The lens employs an integrated Optical SteadyShot image stabilization technology, which is useful in macro photography and at telephoto focal lengths. Beside macro, Sony says that photographers can use this optic in portrait photography, as it delivers a shallow depth of field.
Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS lens will be released this July for $1,100. It is available for pre-order right now at Amazon.
Sony invites users to capture handheld photos in low-light conditions with the FE 28mm f/2 lens
The Sony FE 28mm f/2 lens is a wide-angle prime model that has been designed for landscape photographers who shoot in low-light conditions. The company says that its bright aperture will allow users to shoot without a tripod in poorly-lit environments, including indoors.
The company says that this model provides edge-to-edge image sharpness and superior image quality thanks to its multi-coated surfaces that reduce ghosting and flare. Its focusing system is based on an inner focus mechanism, which delivers quiet autofocusing.
Sony will release the FE 28mm f/2 wide-angle prime lens this May for a price of $450. Photographers can already pre-order the product via Amazon.
The lens that is good at everything: Zeiss Distagon T* FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA wide-angle
The third prime lens of the bunch comes from Zeiss. The Distagon T* FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA wide-angle lens is a versatile model that can be used for portraits, landscapes, street photography, and videography even in low-light conditions, thanks to its very bright maximum aperture.
Zeiss and Sony are promising that this model will offer “corner-to-corner” sharpness even when it is being used at its maximum aperture. Additionally, it provides superior contrast thanks to its T* coating.
Zeiss Distagon T* FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA lens is a weathersealed lens, resistant to dust and moisture. It will be released in April for $1,600 and it can be pre-ordered right now at Amazon.
Sony reveals ultra-wide and fisheye converters for FE 28mm f/2 lens
Alongside these three new Sony prime lenses, the company has revealed two converters. The SEL075UWC is a ultra-wide converter designed for the FE 28mm f/2 lens, which turns it into a 21mm optic with a maximum aperture of f/2.8.
On the other hand, the SEL057FEC is a fisheye converter designed for the same FE 28mm f/2 lens. It will turn this optic into a 16mm f/3.5 lens.
The SEL075UWC converter will become available in May for $250, while the SEL057FEC will also be released this May for $300.
Two new ultra-wide and fisheye converters introduced for E-mount cameras with APS-C sensors
Finally, Sony has decided to introduce a couple of converters for E-mount lenses designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras.
The VCL-ECU2 is a ultra-wide converter aimed at E 16mm f/2 and E 20mm f/2.8 lenses, increasing the angle of view to an equivalent of 12mm and 16mm, respectively.
The VCL-ECF2 is a fisheye converter aimed at the same optic. In each case, the converter will make sure that the lenses will offer an 180-degree angle of view.
Sony will begin selling the VCL-ECU2 as of May 2015 for $160 and the VCL-ECF2 as of this May for $180.
