Photographer Tim Tadder has paid a tribute to the Mexican holiday known as “Day of the Dead” / “Dia de Muertos” with a portrait photo project that includes special costumes and “calaveras” makeup.

The Day of the Dead, also known as Dia de Muertos or El Dia de los Muertos, is a three-day holiday celebrated in Mexico and areas in other countries inhabited by people of Hispanic origins. Some of the earliest celebrations of this holiday are attributed to the goddess Mictecacihuatl, who was celebrated in ancient Aztec festivals.

Tim Tadder is a renowned photographer living in Southern California, a region where Day of the Dead celebrations occur each year. An important part of the arts and decorations of this holiday revolves around the “Calavera Catrina”, which means the “Elegant Skull”. Catrina is a female skeleton wearing graceful dresses and hats, so people dress like this and paint skulls on their faces.

In order to become a part of this festival, the photographer has partnered with a couple of other artists, who have created a dramatic portrait photo series, depicting the Calavera Catrina throughout the four seasons of the year: fall, winter, spring, and summer.

Las Muertas: surreal tribute to the “Day of the Dead” Mexican holiday

Photographer Tim Tadder teamed up with Krisztianna, an artist based in Los Angeles who creates amazing figurines for the Day of the Dead. Krisztianna has come up with the sets and she has painted the models for the photoshoot by hand.

Additionally, the styling and the clothing have been created by Julia Reeser. It all turned into an ethereal series, which shows a burned-down planet with clouds building up for a massive storm. It is a perfect setup to celebrate the Day of the Dead.

As for the name of the photo project, it is inspired by the Spanish name of this holiday. The artists named it “Las Muertas”, illustrating the multiple faces of the Calavera Catrina and the goddess Mictecacihuatl.

Tim Tadder’s work is always unique, always striking

The Day of the Dead is celebrated annually from October 31st to November 2nd. The influences of this Mexican holiday are visible in South California, so Tim Tadder could not have remained oblivious to them. “Las Muertas” is the artist’s own vision of the celebration and it is a great way to pay a tribute to the dead.

The photographer captures the Calavera Catrinas in a unique manner, which is nothing else that you can expect from his other works. Tim Tadder has amazing captured the portraits of George W. Bush, Bill Gates, Ice Cube, and Michael Phelps among others.

Moreover, the photographer has come up with commercial campaigns for Mercedes, Adidas, Coca Cola, Microsoft, McDonald’s or Sony. More photos and details can be around at Tim Tadder’s official website.
