Exciting camera news and photo rumors of March 2015

Nikon introduced a new DSLR and a compact camera, while Sony focused on the FE-mount lens line-up. This is some of the most important camera news of March 2015, which is joined in this round-up by the most exciting rumors from the photo-video industry.

Things tend to cool down after a month that hosted a major event, so March is usually suffering from the CP+ Show hangover. The 2015 was no different, as many products were launched at CP+ 2015, so only a few new products were announced in March 2015.

Nevertheless, here is the most exciting camera news of March 2015, which is joined by the most interesting rumors that surfaced on the web during the previous month.

Nikon D7200 front
After months of rumor and speculation, Nikon unveiled the D7200 in early March 2015.

Best camera news of March 2015: Nikon launched D7200 and Coolpix P900 cameras

March 2015 started with Nikon’s announcement of the D7200, the company’s most advanced DX-format DSLR in the absence of a D400 to replace the D300s. The D7200 is a minor improvement over the D7100, as it offers enhanced battery and buffer size along with built-in WiFi and NFC.

Another invigorating Nikon announcement during the past month consisted of the Coolpix P900. This bridge camera features an 83x optical zoom lens, which provides a full frame equivalent of 24-2000mm. This is impressive no matter how you look at it and it could become one of the favorite cameras of travel and vacation photographers.

March 2015 was the month of products for travel photographers

Olympus is proposing its own solution for people who travel a lot. The new Stylus SH-2 is a minor upgrade over the Stylus SH-1, as it comes with RAW support and some new shooting modes. This compact camera features a 25x optical zoom lens.

Sony has also introduced a product that will be welcomed by travelers. It consists of the FE 24-240mm f/3.6-6.3 OSS lens, which has been designed for FE-mount mirrorless cameras.

The PlayStation maker has expanded its FE-mount lens line-up with the 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS, 28mm f/2, and Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 ZA optics.

Canon 4K fixed-lens camera Jackie Chan
The Canon 4K fixed-lens camera has been launched by actor Jackie Chan at en event in China. The device is officially coming out at NAB Show 2015 this Apri.

Canon takes the spot for the most mentions within the rumor mill

The rumor mill was very active throughout March 2015. Canon has received the most mentions, as the Japanese company is allegedly working on a slew of new products, including cameras and lenses.

According to various sources, these are the upcoming Canon-branded cameras:

  • 4K fixed-lens camera: this unnamed model has been spotted at an event in China and it should be officially revealed at NAB Show 2015 this April;
  • PowerShot G17: this model will replace the G16 with a larger sensor, more extended zoom, and brighter aperture sometime by the end of June 2015;
  • PowerShot SX70: an interesting patent for a 100x optical zoom lens has showed up online, triggering the SX60 replacement rumors;
  • 5D Mark IV: not a single month goes by without this camera being mentioned. The DSLR is now said to have a 28-megapixel sensor that records 4K videos;
  • EOS-1 body with 50.6MP sensor: Canon is waiting to see whether or not consumers will enjoy the 5DS and 5DS R cameras. If they do, then the company might make a 50.6MP shooter with the body of an EOS-1 DSLR;
  • action camera: Canon has noted that camcorder sales are dropping fast, while action camera sales are on the rise, so it has revealed that it needs to join this market in the future.
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens
The next lens to be announced by Canon consists of an EF 50mm f/1.8 STM model.

A number of Canon lenses are expected in the future, too, as follows:

  • EF 50mm f/1.8 STM: the next Canon lens to be announced will be one with a 50mm focal length and a maximum aperture of f/1.8. It is said to come out this April;
  • EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM: the next L-designated lens will be a prime, so the rumor mill says that it consists of a 35mm optic with a maximum aperture of f/1.4;
  • EF 50mm f/1.2L II USM: another 50mm lens is coming in 2015, but towards the end of the year. It will be a brighter f/1.2 model;
  • EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM successor: Canon will replace the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens with a new version, possibly 15-35mm f/2.8L, in 2016;
  • EF 400mm f/5.6L IS II: the 400mm line-up will be entirely revamped and the EF 400mm f/5.6L IS II lens is the missing link, so it will be unveiled next year;
  • TS-E 45mm and 90mm replacements: the plans for new tilt-shift lens have not been abandoned. Rumors say that new TS-E optics are coming in 2016;
  • EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II: there are some whispers hinting that the current EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS lens could get a Mark II version sometime in the future.

A few Sony cameras expected to show up in April and May 2015

Sony will hold a product launch event on April 23 during its own 2015 World Photography Awards. The rumor mill says that new A-mount or RX cameras are coming on this date. The RX2 compact camera is said to come with a curved sensor, while the A99II could become the flagship A-mount camera.

Other new cameras that are on the verge of being revealed by Sony are the WX400 and HX70 compacts. We should not rule out an April launch for these, while the A7RII mirrorless camera is most likely coming in May 2015.

Fujifilm and Olympus planning to launch flagship cameras in the future

Fujifilm is believed to be actively working on an X-Pro1 successor, called X-Pro2. This mirrorless camera is said to employ a 24-megapixel sensor, EXR III processor, and 4K video recording.

On other hand, Olympus is also developing its flagship OM-D camera. The E-M1 Mark II is coming out in 2016 and it is expected to feature a 1/32000s electronic shutter mode along with a handheld 40-megapixel high-resolution mode.

Samyang 100mm f/2.8 macro teaser
Samyang is teasing the launch of a new lens, which is said to be a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens.

Samyang and Nikon to make official announcements this month

At least a couple of products are surely coming out within the next few days: the Samyang 100mm f/2.8 macro lens and Nikon 1 J5 mirrorless camera. The former has been teased by the lens maker itself, while the latter will be announced on April 2, according to the rumor mill.

There are more digital imaging products to be launched later this year. One of them is almost sure to come and it consists of the Panasonic GX8 Micro Four Thirds camera.

We hope to see you on Camyx during April 2015 and beyond, so that you can check out the latest camera news and rumors!
