Zeiss has announced that it is working on a wide-angle lens that will be added later in 2015 to the Loxia series of optics for Sony FE-mount mirrorless cameras.

Before the start of Photokina 2014, Zeiss introduced a couple of new Loxia lenses. This series is designed to work with Sony FE-mount cameras, such as the A7 and A7R.

The 35mm f/2 and 50mm f/2 are manual focus lenses delivering exceptional image quality and they are the only units to be available on the market. However, they will be joined by a new model later in 2015, as a company representative has confirmed that a Loxia-series wide-angle optic will be released later this year.

Sony FE-mount users getting a Zeiss Loxia wide-angle lens later in 2015

The Zeiss Loxia wide-angle lens has been confirmed by Richard Schleuning, the National Sales Manager of the German manufacturer in the US. Richard has been present at the National Association of Broadcasters Show 2015 in order to talk with the fans and the press at the company’s booth over the course of this major event.

Beside presenting some of the ultra-expensive optics introduced for cinematographers, Mr. Schleuning has also spoken about the company’s future plans. Although he has not revealed much, he has announced that Sony FE-mount users should expect a new wide-angle lens sometime later this year.

The only hints that were given in the discussion were the fact that the Zeiss Loxia wide-angle lens would be built around a similar idea as its 35mm f/2 and 50mm f/2 counterparts. This means that the optic will most likely have a de-clicked aperture and will be a manual focus model, so it will be welcomed by videographers.

The interview was conducted at NAB Show 2015 by Megan Donnelly from AbelCine.
