Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA SSM II lens unveiled

Sony has announced a new A-mount lens that replaces an older model. The Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA SSM II lens is here with speed and image quality improvements.

Sony keeps saying that the A-mount is not dead and it still has a future. Although the amount of new lenses is quite small, the PlayStation maker is handing out crumbs to photographers using this mount.

The latest addition to the A-mount system is the Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA SSM II lens, which replaces the original model without any changes made to the focal length and to the maximum aperture. However, the new model will offer a higher image quality and speed improvements when it comes to subject tracking.

Both Zeiss and Sony have designed this lens for professional photographers. This is a high-quality optic that will provide major improvements to the overall image quality.

The lens has 17 elements in 13 groups with one Extra Low Dispersion element and one Super Extra Low Dispersion element. Additionally, the internal design includes three aspherical elements and a T* coating. The results are reduced chromatic aberration and distortions as well as less ghosting and flare.

Moreover, the autofocus performance has been enhanced. The announcement says that the SSM Super Sonic Wave Motor drive supports four times faster subject tracking, so that moving subjects remain in focus while panning or tilting.

The minimum aperture is set at f/22. The minimum focusing distance is 28 centimeters / 11.02 inches. The optic supports manual focusing and it comes with a MF ring as well as a distance scale.

Its filter thread measures 77mm, while its diameter stands at 83mm. The total length is 114mm and its weight stands at 872 grams / 1.92lbs, so it may be considered a bit heavy.

Sony has confirmed that this is a weathersealed lens, which means that you can take it outside when it is raining or you can take it with you to the desert as sand will not affect its performance.

The Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA SSM II lens will begin shipping by the end of June 2015 for a price of $2,250 and you can already pre-order it at B&H PhotoVideo.
