Sony has announced a new A-mount lens that replaces an older model. The Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA SSM II lens is here with speed and image quality improvements.

Sony keeps saying that the A-mount is not dead and it still has a future. Although the amount of new lenses is quite small, the PlayStation maker is handing out crumbs to photographers using this mount.

The latest addition to the A-mount system is the Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA SSM II lens, which replaces the original model without any changes made to the focal length and to the maximum aperture. However, the new model will offer a higher image quality and speed improvements when it comes to subject tracking.

Additionally, the internal design includes three aspherical elements and a T* coating. The results are reduced chromatic aberration and distortions as well as less ghosting and flare.

Moreover, the autofocus performance has been enhanced. The announcement says that the SSM Super Sonic Wave Motor drive supports four times faster subject tracking, so that moving subjects remain in focus while panning or tilting.
